I have a problem with my laptop. About a month ago it started shutting itself down for no apparent reason. I have a msi ex625. At first I was able to restart it after a few seconds but as time past the problem is becoming more frequent. I thought it might be the power supply cord because one night it smelt like burning rubber and started to spark so I order a new one. I even remove the battery to see if that was the problem. But the problem still persist. When the power button is press it would light up for a second and shut off again.
Today, after shutting down in the early hrs of the morning and me trying several times, it power up twelve hrs later and only after I unplug adapter from the power cord.
I'm at a lost at what to do. I am a complete novice when it comes to computer. I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.

It may have something to do with your motherboard. Try to look for a disassemble guide. And check if the power connection on the motherboard is clean.

Obviously seems like an overheating problem.

open up the bottomplate and remove as much dust as you can around the fan and especially between the fan and the heatsink grill. With enough dust it can even become a nice thick wooly layer of dust/hair/other shiet.

I was going to suggest this too. You can also get a small can of compressed air for electronics which can be found at Walgreens or Walmart for a pretty cheap price. Take it outside so you don't get dust all over the place and use short bursts of air not in to the exhaust vents, but in to the vent underneath the laptop and out the exhaust. That way you're not just blowing dust back into the vents.

@OP: Chech the event log to find the cause for the shutdowns. You can also upload the log file and I'll take a look at it.

Fastest way to get to the event log is going to the control panel and then use the search function.

Did you check if it's still under warranty?

Really seems as an overheating problem due to dust. You mentioned that it's happening more frequently? That's because more dust gather over time, which will make the laptop shut down more frequently because of higher temps.

Try opening it, and check the fans :D
