another ge75 thread

hi there. first time here

I've been looking to get a new laptop. currently have a ge60 I bought circa 2013. it runs a gtx765m which is woefully inadequate for current gaming. I realised this when I tried to run total war:war hammer 1 and it was incredibly choppy and virtually unplayable.

been looking to get another msi and the ge75 raider looks quite good. but I have a few questions

1) what are the benefits of the 2080 over the 2070? is it worth the additional expense?
2) if I get a new laptop today what's the average time I can expect it to last with current spec games
3) is hidevolution customisation worth it? looking at more cooling options because the ge60 runs quite hot when gaming and I'm fairly sure that caused me to return it to the shop once.
4) I don't see this question asked a lot but what can I do with the old ge60 I have?

if I'm only looking to play total war type games is the raider overkill? do you have any recommendations for MSI machines that will be able to play total war 3 kingdoms and future (and past!) games?

The GE75 is fantastic, its a thin gaming laptop that still packs the full GPU versions.

1)The 2080 should be up to 30% faster than the 2070, and is generally just a faster version with the same capabilities. The 2080 should be quite more capable at playing games at 4K in comparison, but the 2070 is still plenty fast. Basically has more cores, more memory bandwidth, higher RT core count for Ray tracing (though performance is lacking, in my opinion).

2)With how tech is developing, keep in mind our current pascal GPUs are 2 years old, and that a high end GPU like the GTX1080 can still play games maxed out. I'd say you can expect 2 years of high settings at least, and then many more years before you can't run games. Specially since we have 6 cores CPUs now.

3) Resellers offer many different services and indeed are worth it if you don't plan on touching the insides of your laptop yourself. It is VERY recommend to repaste your laptop, and particularly users are opting for Liquid Metal (LM) as it is the best performing thermal solution for optimal temperature control, and resellers are pro at installing them. Most resellers charge a small fee to do it but it is totally worth it. HIDEvolution offers additional modifications if required, though not sure if all of them apply to all laptops (holes for better thermal performance). Other users are reporting that GentechPC has a promotion offering the cooling upgrades basically for free. Not sure if Xotic is offering promotions but they also offer several options.

I would recommend getting LM and thermal pads, as well as RAM upgrade to have dual channel RAM, since some models come with a single sitck, limiting performance.

4) You can sell it to a friend or keep it as a backup unit in case something happens with your new toy. We have a market here to sell stuff but we have requirements that you must meet before participating. New users can't come and sell, for protection of all users.

I am of the mindset that you should get the best you can get with your budget. If you are going after value, the best option is going for an RTX2060 or a previous gen pascal GPU 1060, should be cheap. But if you want long lasting performance you will need to spend money but it lasts longer before you need to change your laptop because it can't keep up.

 

thanks for the detailed reply. after thinking some more I've been wondering what's the difference between the 2060 and 2070? in terms of numbers I know it's more power but what does that actually translate to when gaming? say use bf5 as an example what will the 2070 be able to do that the 2060 can't?

 

I wish I could give you a concrete answer but there are a lot of missing data for the RTX line in general, particularly 2060 and 2070. From what I gathered, the RTX2060 should be near a GTX1070, but it seems from testing done, it's a bit slower. So it's somewhat between 1060 and 1070.

As an example, the RTX2060 should handle BF5 no problem at high settings with good framerate, provided you don't use RTX features which tank performance. The RTX2060 despite being the slowest of the current RTX line, should still provide high performance for 1080p. As a value proposition, it is often said that you should get the RTX2060 since the premium for 2070 and 2080 is too high for the performance upgrade.

I often say go with an RTX2060 or 2080, if your budget allows. But that's just my opinion.

 

I would go with a 2070 minimum personally. Although I went with the 2080 but that's your choice.

I don't think they do any OC'ing or other tweaking beyond whatever Schenker Technologies / XMG does, and I didn't notice them mentioning what driver versions.

 

thanks for the info, so even the RTX2060 is doing 100fps at 1080p at ultra, and the 2070 is generally 15%-20% faster. The 2080 is an additional 30% faster over the 2070 aprox.

Though these GPUs are very strong for 1080p, the difference becomes greater at higher resolutions, like 4K.

 

This laptop seems good. Can't wait to buy one next year
