What msi chassis is this? i was looking on MSI's site and didnt see any "g60" and i tried "GS60" but that is an older model. trying to see if theres a compromise between light/cheap and dGPU

seems to match up. the gs63 lists 1050ti and 1060 as the available GPUS on msi's site but xotic seems to have fit a 1070 max-Q in it, not sure if thats good heat wise lol. is a 1070 even needed for 1080p?

Getting the most powerful graphics card you can afford is good approach for a number of reasons; particularly for performance, longevity and resale value. Getting something that is only "adequate" for today may get old and slow a whole lot faster than you would like it to, and it will be more difficult to sell if you decide you want something newer and better.

depends on what you play. Some games benefit from the higher clockspeed, others benefit from the higher amount of cuda cores. If you're playing sourcegames or other dx 9 based games, the GTX 1060 will provide higher frames.

in modern AAA titles the GTX 1070 should perform much better despite the terrible clockspeed.

its mostly for school, was about to pull the trigger on a surface pro but figured i'd compare with xotic since they have financing.

looking for something lighter than an alienware 13 and around $1200 (that thing was like 5.5 lbs/2.5 kg and pretty much stayed on my desk. looking to knock about 1lb off that)

my last laptop had a 1060 and 60 hz screen and was fine for my gaming needs i honestly havent bought any pc games in about a year.
i want to try NFS Payback, so 1080 med settings in that is good enough

that game will run maxed out, regardless of 1060 or 1070. In terms of cooling, both the 1060 and 1070 have around the same TDP, meaning same temps.

yeah lol honestly the 1070 is a bit out of the price range i was thinking, but its the lightest of the laptops xotic has (not including the laptops without a dgpu)

G60 weights 3.96lbs which is less of a concession compared to the surface i was looking at (2.37 lbs) in return for being able to do some light gaming.

anybody play with a GS63? is the build quality good?

build quality of gaming notebooks are generally mediocre, they can't compete with business class notebooks, it's still fine tho. GS63 is a good gaming notebook, as long you get a GTX 1060.

so far looking at these with the Leopard being the closest to my budget (was only spending $800 on the surface including accessories). Mainly need it for programs like note taking, excel, visio, and visual studio (school stuff) so portability was key hence the surface. i can try the 4 lbs in exchange for gaming, not sure if the other ones would be much different from the alienware 13 i sold (5lbs + a backpack full of textbooks and binders adds up)

    xotic g60 stealth
    1070 Max-Q, 7700HQ $1549
    3.96 lbs

    msi GE63VR Raider-213
    7700HQ, 1070, $1479
    4.8 Lbs

    msi GE63VR Raider-632
    7700hq, 1060, $1349
    4.85 Lbs

    msi GP63 Leopard-602
    8750h, 1060, $1119
    4.8 Lbs

    I'd go for the msi GE63VR Raider-213
I mean 100bucks from 1060 to 1070 is well worth it. It's not even maxq which makes it even better.

Yep, it's based on the GS63 as others have mentioned. If you need something light it's a great choice, though that Leopard you listed is a pretty good deal as well.

Yes light is a must, how does the Leopard feel? (EX: sticking it in a backpack full of 5lbs school stuff and walking home for an hour)

Just for reference surface book would fit my need perfect (light weght work laptop with light gaming) just its too expense.

i tried searching again and am seeing a few other options

    • sager NP8953, NP8954, and NP8955: under 4.5 lbs

    • g60 stealth (tried to look up GS63 reviews but not sure which GS63 sku this chassis is based off)

    • 8 MSI models under 5 lbs (GP63 LEOPARD-041, GP63 LEOPARD-602, GE63VR RAIDER-002, GE63VR RAIDER-213, GE63VR RAIDER-632, GF63 8RD-066, GL63 8RD-067, GP63 LEOPARD-013)

raider-213 and Leopard-31 seem like the better of the 8 msi models

5lbs is under my threshold for noticing much when it's on my back. My work laptop is a little heavier than that and it doesn't bother me on my back for my daily commute even if I'm carting the adapter around with it.

I have a Surface Pro as well, if I had known how little I'd be using the tablet mode / touchscreen I think I would have opted for something like the G60. (Not that I don't like it, it's a wonderful little machine, just has prominent design features that don't really get used)

i have back problems but the lighter ones should be ok. to be fair i do use the touchscreen but i can sacrifice it for some gaming instead.

so out of those 12 models i listed above you think the g60 is the better one?

The lightest for sure, though I think I like the GE series a little better overall.

if its the better buy then the GE sounds good. just trying to see if any of the GEs have an ips panel.

are the GE usually better than the GS? the weight seems about the same.

The GE you listed is a N156HHE-GA1 I believe which is not IPS though it is a 100% sRGB panel so it's not exactly bad for content creation.

the ones i listed were just the ones i saw with a 1070 (non max-q).

not a super fan of TN panels, which mostly why i was looking for an ips. i dont see any GE63s with ips tho.

    so GE > GS?

There aren't any at the moment, just that same 120Hz TN

Generally the GE is better, the only things the GS will have going for it other than form factor are nicer display panel and occasionally higher resolution display panel (some of the previous models came with a 4K panel if memory serves)

i havent seen them in person but with similar weight and both being 15.6 im not sure what the difference form factor is.

the GS65s seem to have 144hz panels so prob still not ips? and neither the GS and GE have gsync correct? if thats the case i guess the 94%NTSC on the GE is better than the 72% on the GS.

also i've been reading on here that the GS only has 1070 max-q even tho some on your website say they have the regular 1070. bit concerned about the GE63 then, not sure if its a max-q

The GS65 actually does have an IPS display, and upgrade from the GS63VR which has the same TN panel as the GE does.

really? which sku is the ips? edit oh nvm it is the AHVA panel . weird that it has a lower color than the tn panel. guess the tn panel would be better

i've been reading on here that the GS only has 1070 max-q even tho some on your website say they have the regular 1070. is the GE63 also max-q

i was looking up reviews and on the msi site, theres a newer version out with the 8750h and msi list the rgb-025 and rgb-010 as the top skus. i see the 010 on your site but not the 025. any clue what the difference is? and i know the 8750h is newer but is ti worth the $600 price difference?

Should be Max-Q in all the GS models and full cards in the GE models.

Difference between the 010 and 025 is default drive, and that looks to be it.
