Just wondering because the cooling system in this system is so damned good, I doubt the heat output would be the problem.
-
doubt it, not to mention have to change the heatsink and the crazy price for the unit 480m is kinda turn off... the psu also that come with the unit is 150w, so kinda hard to use it too..
-
Doubt so, 480M is not meant for 15", even for clevo w860cu, a 15" with dual fan cooling, would only support up to 460M/470M, it's also mainly due to the 100W requirement which require modified MXM slot. But support for 460M/470M is possible.

The 470m is more powerful than the HD5870?
-
No benchmarks are out for the GTX 470M yet though the estimate is it should perform as well or a bit better than the Mob. HD5870.
The real issue with the 470M is that, at least in the Clevo notebooks using it, it costs an extra $425US over the Mob. HD5870 and an extra $395US over the GTX 460M. For those prices it's ridiculous to try and justify the performance increase. -
The 480M has an extra heatsink pipe. So personally, I don't think any 15" laptop could cool it adequately if you modded the heatsink to 2 pipes.

What's that about the heatpipe?
You know you can take the heatsink off the GPU...
BTW the 660 has 3 heatpipes on the GPU:

I think it would work. But you would need a new heatsink because some components (chokes) are in a different place and would obstruct the heatsink (guessing).
Don't know what the 460m looks like, going from a 460m to a 480m would probably work without needing to change the heatsink. -
So it could be possible, hopefully
.
Obviously not needed at the moment the 5870 is doing well, but thinking about future here.
Also, I am still astounded by the heat dissipation, coming from an alienware which the gpu would hit 90-100 degrees easily and the whole chassis would be really hot and that was with a 8800gtx, to a 5870 that stays under 70 degrees after playing for hours. Highest i've had it under normal conditions is 66 degrees. When playing on my cover in bed, it hits 74 degrees, which is totally understandable though. (Not advised)
This laptop is amazing. I still can't get over the sound either. I plugged in the apple headphones that I had just phone on the seat, took them straight out again after listening to how tinny they were. -
What I am hoping is beiing able to change to the 6870 mobility cards. They will offer a decent jump specially if they end up with 960sp units, 32 ROPs and 256 bit GDDR5 design. -

If I have an upgrade path of either the 6xxx or GTX 470m, I would be happy indeed.
That being said, I'm not even letting my poor machine catch a glimpse of the 480m. That energy-hungry monster can stay far, far away. Besides, I think it wouldn't even physically fit. -
I actually think the design system is revolutionary.
They took a step back from the traditional vent underneath, vent right and vent at back and fan sandwiched between them, and they pull the air from the middle of the chassis where the air is cooler and unobstructed. E.g. Placing it on the lap, theres a gap where the legs are and that's where it's pulling the air from.
I don't know what's going on inside but that must be pretty damned clever as well.
Yeah the 480m would be very hot and very greedy
Is anyone else finding that the i7 runs alot warmer than the gpu?
Would the GX660r take the 480m?
