I have an MSI GX740 and I am posting to ask for some input. My CPU runs about 57C at idle which you might think isn't too bad. But even little activity (like my security software monitoring network traffic) that uses about 13% CPU for couple minutes heats it up to 89C and the fan runs high (not max tho).
I've seen temps reaching 96C for a brief moment before the fan speed increases and keeps it down to 80~90C. Now this is all just due to low activity.
My questions:
1) Is this normal for this laptop/CPU?
2) Will making mods like attaching ram sinks to heat pipe or making holes in the back cover void my warranty?
3) If so, how do people here do it? (There are people posting mods for GX740. Obviously their warranty isn't expired yet because it hasn't been too long since the model came out.)

That's a good idea Marecki. +1 rep
But people who attach ram sinks on their heat pipe are okay with voiding their warranty because they have good financial support is that what I am hearing? -
.
Being financially independent is one thing, being passionate about tweaking computers is another one. Common sense and knowledge (and the drive to search for it) highly advised

Ramsinks dont void your warranty, they can easily be taken off if you ever need to take it in for repair.

Well ... you can remove covers, put ram sinks or do such unnecessary stuff trying to solve your problem. The real thing that you need to do and it won't void your warranty is just to take your heatsink remove the stock thermal paste and apply new one. People here are using IC Diamond 7 | Arctic Silver 5, both are very good and will drop your idle temperatures to 40-45 degrees.

I was interested in putting ram sinks just as an experiment so I will try it sometime after figuring out how some ppl install it so that it's still removable.
But thx for the tip about thermal paste. I think that will probably help a lot. I will try that too. -
