It seems to me that all the recent 12" MSI laptops have the same case and parts apart from the motherboard. I'd be interested in trying to buy a newer motherboard to upgrade my MS-1012 / S260 to an MS-1057.

I get the impression though that MSI doesn't really like to sell parts to end users. Anyone have any experience with this?

E-mail or telephone to find out if they will. The answer will probably be no, but you never know. If they do offer, it will almost certainly be expensive. Motherboards for notebooks aren't generally cheap, and most cost a quarter or more of the price of the whole notebook.

If you find out let me know, I'd love to turn my l740 into a l745.

Try talking with Raymond in tech support. He would be one of the best people to help you out.

well, at least on the website, MSI won't even let me contact tech support. When I try to register my MS-1012 and enter in my serial number, it says that I have to go through my reseller because this is a barebone.

The registration is not for barebone models, only for MSI brand systems. You do not have to register, this is all covered through your reseller.

If they will not give you the price or the component contact us and we may be able to help you.....
