Seriously. The GE700 looks perfect. Great form factor. ATI Video Card. Great Chip. Nice Weight.

and a crappy screen. in fact ALL of the new ones have these ridiculous screen resolutions. Not even an option for a nice screen.

    People want a decent screen resolution. i.e. 1920 x 1200 or 1920 x 1080 or ideally better.

    I would assume that it's mostly a cost-cutting measure.
    Still, 1680x1050 isn't exactly "ridiculous" on a 17", and it's pretty good on 15".

1680 x 1050 is probably one of the better screen rez available for lappies. It's 16:10, and has enough pixels to look good, without hurting frame rates too much in games.

    On a 15" it's PERFECT.

1366x768 is something to complain about though.

I'm talking 17 inch only. I've had 1900 x 1200 on every laptop for the last 5-7 years. Not exactly new technology.

I'd buy their laptops, but I'm not willing to go back to the 90s in screen rez.

1920x1200 is a great rez, but laptop GPU's can't (for some games) handle it in gaming. Of course you never mentioned anything about gaming, so I should add that it IS better for professional type work (more space = more productivity).

I still think 1680x1050 is a great trade off, especially for 15"ers.

With the higher-end laptop GPUs like the Mobility HD 5850 and 5870, I think performance is good enough that the step up to 1920x1080 is worth it, and probably 1920x1200 (which is another significant step up, mind you) as well.

There should be 2 version , one with BD & 1920x1080 and the other one with a standard ODD & 1680x1050 res for gamers.
And bring down the cost for those who don't give a damn about Bluray(like myself) ...

Gaming performance is better on 1680x1050 than on 1900x**** or 1980x****

Crappy screen res, dude if i didn't have low screen res i'd cry,

Concidering the task, something with poor res will utterly destroy anything, for example, games..

But as dead said, its better lower based for gamers, you can salvage more frames out of say a card that doesn't handle to well at 1080p, but the 5870 is hitting the point in time now, where 1080p is nice, and 1650x1080 would destroy other competition out there.

    well I would like 1920*1200 on a 17"
and i guess if the gpu cant handle game play, you dont have to run @ 1920*1200 you can change this?

Well your screen is has its packed density of like 2 million pixels at 1080p, you drop this down you begin to see your image quality degrade, at a native res, you'l compare 1440x900 v 1920x1200 and see that the difference is minimal if not non existant, with ofc the 1440x900 hammering the 1920 down flat,

Its really a matter of preference to some degree, but having mass res on a GPU thats good, but can't handle everything, i'd say isn't the smartest, which makes 1650x1080 an ideal res.

screen res depends on a person imo.
1680x1050 on css (game i play) looks great on a 15inch but the reg is tottally different thats why for that game i play 800x600 or 1024x768 thats how the makers put for the best reg possible<--- ( i play competitively so reg matters for me) . but for bc2 1680x1050 is the beez kneez.

Rofl my laptop is 3 years old, don't even give a damn about screen resolution, as long as stuff looks neat on the screen.

The lack of WUXGA on the 17in is what has me looking at the 15.4 MSI laptops. Granted 1680x1050 isnt bad for a 15.4in, but on a 17in its unacceptable for me as I need every pixel I can get for work. Not everyone is looking to game primarily on these laptops, and the 58XX series can handle WUXGA very well so gaming performance issues are not a real excuse to exclude that screen option. I think its a price issue, but then again that would be remedied by offering WUXGA and WSXGA as screen options so those of us that rely on more screen real estate could be as happy as those who do not.

Go snag a LG WUXGA+ 1920x1200 panel and replace it yourself. You get the resolution you want with one of the best panels out there.

I feel that my 1680 x 1050 is perfect for a 17 inch laptop. I use a 17 inch MSI with 1680 x 1050, and I get a lot of space without killing my performance in games. I can see why you like the 1920 x 1200, but the 1680 x 1050 is definitely not "crappy"

Well its all opinion based. For a 15.4 WSXGA is tolerable for me, but I find a single WUXGA in my current 17in to be not enough for my needs.

See the problem with this is that it 1) costs WAY too much and 2) will most likely void the warranty. If it was more cost effective, didnt void the warranty and was easy to get I wouldnt even have to think about getting a gx640.

I could understand doing that for a 1280x800.. but 1680x1050 is nearly perfect on a 15". I like it better than 1920x1080 even because of the aspect ratio.

If WUXGA isn't enough, why not just get an external monitor? They're pretty cheap these days.

Try 1440x900 on a 17 inch laptop.... yeah. That's what I was working with on my old gateway 6860. A lot of the budget 17 inch laptops have to cut a corner somewhere in order to keep the prices reasonable, and a lot of the times it's with the screen.

While FHD+ (1920x1080) is decent, WUXGA (1920x1200) is the best for on the go. I cannot take an external LCD everywhere I go so I need my screen to have as many pixels as possible. WSXGA (1680x1050) is fine for a 15.4 which is why Im still considering the gx640, but 1920x1200 would be alot better.

I had a work issued laptop for a few months a few years back that had a WXGA+ (1440x900) screen and yes I agree its painful. As for the budget part, thats why it should be an option. I would pay an extra 200 for the WUXGA option on the gx640/gx740 notebook in a heartbeat.

    Hmm..

I installed the WUXGA screen on my MS-1727-id1.

It is really fine and details are vibrant.

It wasn't really a hard job either.... Granted, you have an hour to spend on installing a fresh new screen for your lappy :D

You can get a refurbished LG WUXGA+ 1920x1200 for around $100. New ones approach $200.
