CES 2015 is coming up in early January. Nvidia is rumored to be showing off of the 960M and 965M. What do you think MSI will show off this year?

I'm thinking the GT80 is a good potential candidate. Maybe we'll see some mid-ranged laptops? Or some some 970/980 laptops?

    What are your thoughts?

    Thank you Captain Obvious! :D

While I'm sure you know what will be shown, I know you can't comment on it. I was hoping for a nice speculation discussion. I'm hoping the coming year won't be too stagnant and we'll get some new models.

    Oh he always is ;)

Don't forget Geno, coverage of these events especially on the mobile front can be a bit rubbish sometimes. It's probably good to do a nice round up after the event for those who can't go ;)

    I'm looking forward to it.

Let me ask this ... if you were in the market for a thin and light like the GS60 - is it worth waiting to buy? I likely wouldn't buy anything less than a 970M, so I'm not really interested in anything weaker.

I think our current GS series models with 970M is a great buy. You cant really go wrong with that one. There will always be newer versions of any Laptop, but i think if you really wanted one now, the GS60 is definitely the one to go with

If the GS60 is the kind of machine you are after then there is not much more to do with the chasis to help improve things so I doubt MSI will be releasing anything drastic regarding that form factor.

It's a very solid machine so I would go for it.

While not quite the appropriate thread, since this is a topic that might be known by the previous two posters and GS60's are already being discussed, are the newer 970m GS60 motherboards compatible with the 860m GS60 chassis? I hate to toss a perfectly good laptop if I could just buy a new motherboard, even at a premium, but the new 970m models are what the GS60 should have been all along and the fact the performance literally doubled in 6 months makes mine feel dated! Usually it's much smaller increases in a given chassis in a year, but not this time!

I've torn mine down to repaste and document way back in April, so assembly isn't an issue, just curious if it's an option. Thanks!

You could just sell your current GS60 and buy a new one.

A physical examination says yes but until it's tested you could not be 100% sure.

Geno, you better take video of all the cool stuff! MSI does come out with a lot of interesting models/ideas and even prototypes but unless you attend CES, you only hear a fraction of stuff.

Considering the GS series was just updated, I think you should buy right now :) Whatever will be shown on CES will most likely appear later 2015 so unless you want to be waiting more, right now is a good time to buy :)

agreed, i think the new GS series are freaking amazing already. If there is any kind of deal out there, you should definitely think about snatching one up. I would totally get one to pair with my GT60 workstation :D

The GS60 is a good notebook but IMO a few things could be improved.

#1 reverse the motherboard for easy slot access for the M.2 SSD slots, memory slots and M.2 wireless access all on the same side
    #2 a better touchpad
#3 an M.2 SSD as stock, get rid of the hard drive.
    #4 better battery
    #5 150W or 180W adapter as stock

The GS series would be awesome if it contained IPS screens and it doesn't. I find LCD screen one of the most important part of the laptop and I cannot believe users have no choice to get those yet.

MSI should make a low end gt72 with an IPS screen too and GS70 models with 970m and IPS screen also.

It would be awesome if those IPS screens were also 120hz.

I am still waiting for my next 17 inch laptop, will it be MSI, we will see... So far I was not able to find it...

The GS60 has IPS screens, but yeah, it sucks that they shortchange the GS70s.

I'd like to see a GS40 :) I know the GS30 is coming out soon but a smaller notebook with dedicated gpu on board would be awesome. Especially if it has the look of the GS70 *hint hint*

1_ Absolutely would be nice to have easier access!
2_ While not great, it's by far not the worst I've used... but could definitely be better.
3_They come with 1-2 M.2 SSD's stock, just with an additional 7200HDD for storage. It is easily swapped out with a 2.5" SSD however (took about 15 minutes to swap mine out). I dare say until SSD prices get a bit more affordable, this is the best bang for buck option for MSI.
4_ Definitely needed! I get 2.5-3 hours out of mine with general usage.
5_They do come with a 150W (19.5x7.7) power supply already. My 860m version did as well.

Screen is IPS on the GS60 series, just not the GS70 series as stated above. Definitely a solid reason at this point to take a hard look at the GS60 over the GS70.

I think a GS40 would be quite intriguing as well, maybe later next year!

My pipe dream is the GS30's external GPU port being adapted to the entire MSI line of notebooks.
