I'm looking into possibly getting an MSI - unsure which model, if any. and was wondering what kind of servicing they offer. If the battery goes bad, will they replace it? Or could you purchase one yourself and replace it? What kinds of problems have people had, and what was done about them? What do you do if you want an updated hard drive of RAM? Does it vary across models? Here are my answers to the new laptop questionnaire. If anyone has any advice at all, I welcome it.

I think probably the best thing you could do, is narrow down or target a specific model, based on the parameters you have indicated above. Since you will be purchasing in the U.S., I'd recommend you first spend some time perusing MSI's US website ( HERE), and this will allow you to better discover your likes and dislikes. This website will also answer many of your questions regarding services and warranty. Once you have targeted a specific model of interest, you can then read specific forum threads regarding user opinions and comments...... or go visit our new MSI forum Rep (MSIGeno) for more specific questioning.

I'll take an MSI over the equivalent Sager 10 times out of 10. I say this as someone who's had at least 5 Sager laptops.

The basics are MSI provide a 2 year domestic, 1 year international warranty with their retail models. This includes all internals except for the battery. That and the AC adapter like other makes are considered consumables and are covered for 6 months I believe.

As Striker pointed out, your budget covers a wide range of machines and options so narrowing down lets you do comparisons of the same size across several brands.

MSI laptops also come with 1 year of accidental warranty, once you register the machine on their website.

What kind of experience do you have with MSI? Any issues? How long have you owned your current MSI, and how old were your previous models before you upgraded to your most recent one? I would like a general idea of the dependability. Also, does the battery life considerably weaken over time? Can you upgrade to a 9-cell from a 6 cell on the GS60 Ghost? I'm debating currently among the Y50 (I've heard good things about Lenovo's reliability), the GS 60 Ghost. 012, or the GE60 Apache. Does anyone know what MSI laptops get the best battery life (as far as regular, wi-fi, word, excel, etc. use goes)? I'm not too worried about battery life, but I'd still like a good amount of it.

My oldest MSI owned is 4 years old now, and it is still up and running. I sold it to my close friend a couple of years ago, and it is still running like a champ :)

I don't think you can change batteries as they are internal now, but it should still give a solid 3 hours of use, or even more. My GT60 lasts around 5 to 6 hours, but it does pack a 9 cell, and a bit more hefty hardware too :)

I will definitely look into it! What other MSIs pack 9-cells? I've been on their website, but I find it hard to navigate and search through all the specs of each laptop. Plus, I'd rather get some reviews from people with experience. Do you know anything about the battery life of the GS60 Ghost? I like all of the ghost series, if I can call it that, from MSI. I love the design and how light it is.

Another question: what happens if the battery on your MSI dies out after the battery warranty has already expired?

You would buy another to replace it or run without battery capacity.

Do you know if the battery is integrated on the MSI GS60?

Yes it is, but it can be disconnected and then replaced easily if you are somewhat technically inclined.
