I'm considering buying a GT70 to replace my AW15 R2. My options are the GT70 or the AW17 R2. I used to own a ROG G751, which was mostly a fantastic laptop except for the profile which I disliked. The large exhaust vents and square battery sat together in a big round lump on the back, which made carrying it in a bag or backpack uncomfortable.

I'm looking at the GT70 which is about the same thickness as the G751, but it's flat not curved. I like the flatness better, but need more input. What is your personal experience with the GT70? Thanks for any feedback.

    Pros:
    - Extremely good speakers
    - Very good performance
    - Extremely good GPU cooling
    - Very compatible with MXM cards due to Optimus
    - Cheap RAM due to being DDR 3
    - Nice Keyboard

    Cons:
    - Known for weak hinges
    - CPU temps are meh

If you can, go for a GT72 6QD with a 6820HK instead, it's even better.

Don't you mean a GT72 6QF, GT72 6QD didn't have a HK CPU in that sku., As QD runs on a HM170 chipset and not the CM236 chipset.

MSI GT70 (or medion erazer whitebook)

    Pros:
    - dynaudio speakers
    - Very good performance (ivy bridge or haswell cpus). Extreme CPUs 2920xm, 3920xm or 4930mx are "quite cheap" (especially the first one).
    - Compatible with (almost) all MXM cards due to Optimus (ivy bridge or haswell)
    - custom BIOS easy to source (allows ratio + BCLK overclock)
    - Cheap RAM due to being DDR3
    - Nice steelseries backlit eyboard

    Cons:
    - Known for weak hinges --> wrong! Was the case on older chassis type gx740 or gx620 but not on this one
    - CPU/GPU temps are average --> correct as there is only ONE fan... Try to source the 0.65A one (AAVID Thermalloy model)

Thanks for the responses guys but I found an AW17 R3 today for a good price and made the purchase. Time to wrap this up.

ahhh you went to the dark side of the force mate... Hope you won't regret it as 17 R3 has CPU & GPU soldered to MB.

It's okay, any purchase is always a good purchase so long the owner is able to enjoy it. :)
