Wondering if it's possible to get a low end GT627 and upgrade the GPU to an Nvidia 200 series.

Even if they are the same type ( which would be MXM III I assume ) the GTX 200 cards would also need to fit the power and thermal requirements, which I doubt they do.

Hmm, i recon the GTX260m should work, but as NAS said, the thermal requirements are pretty high, and the heat sink may not fit, but its always worth a shot :D

Actually i can see a 50% chance of this working now.
If you can get hold of a sager 260m the module is MXM 2.1 although it may be specifically made just for sager, but i'd find out :D

So I take it that GT627 has an MXM III?
And the 200 series uses MXM 2.1?

Based only on sockets, is that compatible? Because there's no use discussing further is you can't even connect them.

It will fit into the slot, if its posts is another story, no one has tried this yet.

Yeah it needs trying, standard MXM 260M will fit, and should boot up (as all the chipsets in these are intelpm45 i think) its just if the 627 has enough juice, i think it will.

No one has really answered my question directly, so I'm going to assume this:

    MSI GT627 - MXM 3.0 socket
    200 series - MXM 2.1 connector

I assume 3.0 is backwards compatible?

I really want to find out because this is the deciding factor for me between a GT627 and a G50VT.

And how hard would it be to mod/swap out the heatsink to withstand the extra heat anyways?

I think I read somewhere in the voluminous GT627 Owners Lounge thread that it was only MXM 2.1, but I do not have one yet and thus this needs to be confirmed by more knowlegeable sources than me.

EDIT: Notebookcheck.net lists the 9800M GS that's in the GT627 as MXM 3. I have no idea if that's an absolute or not. Anyone else care to chime in?

The majority of msi support MXM 2 and 3 with the intel pm45 chipset, the only problem is how much juice runs through the lappy.

To get MXM 3 to work other then on 627 and 725 (plus newer versions) you will need to mod the heat sink.
