Welp! Keyboard not working in Bios.

I have the GE75, and have been using it without issues.

I wanted to reinstall clean since I've been picking up some tricks from this forum. I booted into bios. I realised that my keyboard no longer works in Bios.. I can hold 'Del' and get into the bios, but I cant navigate it.

An external usb keyboard works fine. I flahsed the bios, which didnt help.

Strangely, after not being able to navigate the bios, I turned the computer off, and I couldnt boot into windows! Infinite loading wheel...

I got into the uefi, and tried to fresh install windows, and after it finished installing, after the first reset it got stuck in the windows loading wheel again!

I dont really now how to proceed right now :/

 

Update, after reseting bios via external keyboard, and trying every combination of boot options I had given up and put the laptop down. I decided to try again 30 mins later, and now the keyboard works in bios, and boot menu.

I now cannot boot into the usb in uefi mode, which puts me into an infinite loop in the MSI boot screen.

 

Update: The boot screen is infinite, until I press F2 at which point it instantly boot into UEFI usb

Also my disk enumaration has changed places. Now my SSD is disk 1 and my HDD is disk 0

I am completely lost at this stage...

 

It sounds like your UEFI partition got damaged (in case windows was working and then suddenly not being able to boot). I recommend getting an USB with windows media installation, boot the USB, and select repair.

My issue is still unresolved, and I can not find any info on it.

It started when I restarted out of a stable windows installation, and held Delete to enter into my Bios. Here I tried to unlock my Bios with the key combination, as I have done many times, but it didnt work. When I tried to navigate the menu, that did not work either. My Keyboard and mouse wasn't working. I pressed the power button, and it instantly shut down.

When I tried to boot back into windows, it got stuck in the boot screen. I didnt know what the issue was, but I wanted to reinstall anyways, so I tried that. I realised that once in the boot screen, it will infinately stay at the msi logo with the spinning dots under it, until I press any button on my keyboard.

Later I realised that during the boot up, my keyboard led comes on and off, simultaneously all other external usb devices do the same. They cycle on and of twice and then they stay off until I press any button anywhere, keyboard or mouse, at which points the LEDs come back on, and it boots into windows.

Interesting fact, if the pc isnt interacted with for 30 mins or so, non of this happens, and it just boots normally, all the way into windows.

 

Final Update, as I have exhausted what a user can do I believe.

I have flashed Bios, tried several versions, flashed EC FW, and reseted it every time. I did several cmos clears. The problem goes away after each operation for 1 or 2 boots. After that it returns to not progressing past the logo screen until a key press. Keyboard works in Bios most of the time, however every now and then it decideds not to work in the Bios, until after the next boot into Windows.(I found this particularly strange? Does windows drivers etc. change bios settings?)

Overall the computer is performing as it should, all its benchmarks are similar and it is stable. The fact that I know there is a problem somewhere in the EC FW or Bios really really bugs me. My clean install, with clean driver installations, j95 gpu drivers etc amounted to literally no performance gain. It was a learning experience though...

 

Try reseating both keyboard and touchpad cables and make sure to wipe with clean cloth before putting them back.

 

My keyboard and mouse work flawlessly in the OS after I boot in, and they even work most the time in the Bios now. The only major thing left is the fact that my boots will be stuck at the logo until I touch the keyboard. Even that is not a problem really, but I know it is a sign of a bigger problem which is why it bothers me.

That is odd; and seems like there is something in the firmware or EC that isn't working. It does sound hardware related. I guess just as a way to test... have you tried booting to a USB operating system like UNRAID or LINUX, etc. Or even MEMTEST. Just to see if you have any consistent booting oddity. I assume when you talk about the CMOS clears, etc. you've done the battery reset (paperclip hold for 10 seconds)? Removed battery, etc.

 

I didnt open up the laptop. By CMOS clears, I meant paperclip for 5 secs + hold Power button 30 secs. The boot following this procedure works fine all the way to desktop by the way.

I considered opening it to take out the battery for EC ram reset, however given there is a problem with the EC, I didnt want to remove the factory seal, incase of getting it reported as user error. I will take it in to the service at one point in the next few months.

I will try to boot ubuntu from usb and share my findings.

Another interesting fact I found is, on the basic bios system info, my EC FW number is correctly displayed, however in the unlocked bios, at the bottom of the info page, above the management engine version, my EC FW is displayed as 00.00

Also I am very curios about the RGB keyboard, which seems to remember its last settings (it was all red out of the box, I set it to white) and it is always white in bios, during boot, even if I reset EC, flash the Bios, it seems to remember its settings. This makes me think there is some sort of storage I am not able to reset somewhere..

 

Interesting discovery, my computer boots fine after I shut it down. It only gets stuck in the infinite logo screen if I restart out of windows.

At this stage I am not even sure if the keyboard and the boot is related. I havent had the keyboard not working in the Bios issue for a while. It might be something to do with my EFI partition.

Since the issue was not what I though, and my keyboard does work now, I might make a new thread for the boot problem in the future if I can't solve it.

 

Management Engine is not the same as EC FW.
Go to BIOS, and then System Information at the bottom from the first menu where you should be able to view all of the BIOS/EC information.
Can you provide pictures and then show us what you are seeing?
