I am having screen issues with my msi 1036 laptop. I put the computer into standby packed it up and took it over to my friends house. Of course once there I set everything up and turn it back on. The main machine is running and making all of its normal sounds, but the screen never turned on...hmmm... So I manualy shut it down give it a moment and try again, same thing. This time I shut it down and pluged a normal monitor into my laptop and started it again. Again my screen stayed black but the external monitor showed my desktop. The oddball thing was it had checker board going across the whole screen on the externial monitor. I could see well enough to do a system restore. Upon reboot my laptop screen worked as did the externial monitor, but the checker board was present on both screens and would get worse the more I worked with it. I even tried changing the backgrounds on my desktop to no picture just blue and the checker board went away. So I packed it up and brought it home now I am back to a black screen at home....
Is this software, or the screen crapping out or is it the video card?
Is there anyway to clean the video card connections?
Can I buy a replacement screen or video card and install it myself?
Thankyou.....Nelson

Hey school, I feel bad that no one has responded. I don't have a definite answer to your question but had something similar happen on a desktop a while back. The video stopped working for a bit then came back, but from that point on there were some strange horizontal lines on the screen. Not the checkerboard like you see but a pattern none the less. It turned out the video card had gone bad (the fan stopped working and it overheated) and once I replaced it the system worked fine again.
I've never removed or replaced a video card in laptop so I'm not sure how easy or hard that would beHopefully moving the thread to the top again will get it read by someone with more experience than I have.

I'm sorry to hear about your laptop.
To me, this seems to be a dead/dying video card issue and unfortunately the one inside of your laptop is soldered onto the motherboard.
As a side note, laptop video cards are massively expensive ( ~300 - 500 USD) so it is impractical to try to replace one.
As I see it, you have two options:
1) Use whatever warranty you have to get it fixed
2) Look into getting a new laptop and sell this one "For Parts" or "As Is"
Sorry man...
