    I recently upgraded my GT70 1762 to a 3940XM. I also upgrade the video card to a 970M useing this forum. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt60-70-970m-980m-upgrade-thread.765058/

Under a stress test I am getting close to 100C peaks in temps. I have reseated and reapplied thermal past correctly.

My question is that their are two different types of GPU heat sinks for the GT70

I am thinking of purchasing the GPU with the extra heat sink to the CPU pictured first in this thread. Cost is around $75-$100 depending on where purchased. Will this help and is it worth the investment?

There are two types of the heat sink depending of the model. MSI GT70, GT60 Dominator and Pro have the heat sink that you posted first picture. The other models have the second one picture. If you have 100 C for both CPU and GPU that means that something is not right with the heat sink. Did you modified it properly? This heat sink is the best for GTX 980M and 970M, but unfortunately it's sold.

What are your temperatures at idle?

Both GPU and CPU idle in the low 40s. In game play the temp in the cpu gets into the low 90s and the GPU mid 70s.

Only in a stress test do I see the 100 spikes. I did look for that heat sink that you posted, how much would the help with the CPU temps?

Replace all thermal pads with 0.5mm ones and use ic diamond paste. Be aware the extreme cpu is a higher tdp part and will run much hotter under high loads.

To lower your CPU temps, use a good notebook cooler.

A notebook cooler should not really impact this chassis due to the indirect airflow used, I used 0.5mm pads on the CPU too and a perfect paste job with IC diamond should get you good results.

I was able to get a heatsink for at GTX 770 with the extra heat pipe and modify it for the 970M. Temps on both CPU and GPU are now around 85 under a load

The CPU is on another level, higher TDP and all. That is why you get hotter temps. Aside of proper pasting/heatsink, you would need to tweak it with intel XTU to try and shave off as many watts as possible.

Not bad, you could maybe improve the GPU a little more still but acceptable.

Hello GUYS can some one explaint this ****,

In 3 weeks time I will be getting my GTX 970m card . I just want to recap a few bullet point with you so i am on the right track. I am 100% responsible for my actions.

I have an MSI with GTX 770M GT70 2OC/2OD I want to sell my 770m and buy and install a GTX 970M. Since you have carried out the procedure I was hoping you could point out a few things to me. My course of action is as follows.

    1) modifiy my heat sink and use a good thenrmal compound. Any recomendations? how about thermal pad?

    2) Update laptop BIOS http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT70-2OD.html/#down-bios&Win8.1 64

My current bios is E17631MS.507 I just double checked today and a newer version is out E1763IMS.51B , a few month ago it was version .518V but today its .51B and .518V is no longer on there web site any more but i still have the file.
I know before I remove my 770m I need to update my bios to E1763IMS.50V first, the update it to the new verion .51B .

    3) install the gtx 970m use nvflash and install the 970m rom

restart my laptop and it should work just fine..

Just to pint out, I have never tried to flash a BIOS or VBIOS rom or EC

I take it will not need to Update my EC?

PLEASE reply if you carried out this operation your self, ever advise would help.

Has anyone had a problem with their 970m going to a black screen after reloading Windows 8.1? I have tried multiple combinations of trying to get the computer not go to a blacksreen on boot. Thinking it may actually be a bad card. Amber light stays lit and does not change to white even when the NVidia is disabled.
