Ive seen a few posts on upgrading the GPU on the GX720, but I didnt see anything on the GTX series.

Can I upgrade my 9600m in my GX720 to either of these cards? The 280M and 260M are listed as a 2.1 Type III.

    Thanks!

The best card for the GX720 is the alien4850 1Gb , there's some in the marketplace. The 280m is mxm 3.0 type III , hence not compatible. I don't know about the 260m .. i doubt it's a 2.1 though

Thanks guys - and thanks for the offer, but I use the Laptop connected to my TV for my Nvidia 3d Vision - So I have to stay with the Nvidia line of cards.

Well those card do exist in both versions MXM 3.0 B and MXM 2.1 Type HE and the older type is hard to find at a reasonable price. MXM-Upgrade do sell them, but read bellow, before you spend your money.
Both cards you mention are with HE tab, which is not present at MSI GX720. As it was said before HE tab is used only for additional supply that those cards require. Electrosoft tried to put 8800M GTS card in his MS-1722 (GX720) but it didn't start. We supposed that it was because of additional 15W which are supplied through HE tab. I don't think that there are any restrictions regarding BIOS inside MSI. Also one more thing to consider is that, if you find a way to supply the card through HE tab, is the heat - those cards are very hot. So if you don't have a small lab at home I think that you'd better not try. :D
What is the best you can do? - You can put 9800M GS, or 9800M GTS, basically same card, using heatsink from GT725. This card (9800M GS) is used at GT627 and it require 60W - the exact power that a regular MXM slot can provide. This card also has HE tab but it can work without using it. Also you can find 9800M GT, but you need 512MB version, because 1GB exceeds 60W and it might not work also.
Good luck at whatever you decide to do. :)

True, with a Nvidia cards + HE, the card will either fail to initialize/start or you will end up with some serious downclocks.
