the 1022 is a very attractive package because of its size and cost as compared to the asus w3v or sony sz

however, with both asus and sony pushing new napa laptops with better gpus (w3j with a x1600) the 1022 is now seriously lagging behind...msi must be close to updating the 1022

so my question is, what are people expecting from the new 1022 or when are people expecting them to release a new 1022?

id expect at least a 7400 and dual core is obvious

Considering the 1022 just released in late November, I doubt MSI will be refreshing it within the next few months. Maybe they'll put one out with Merom later in the year, but probably not soon.

If you are looking for something better, for sure look at the Sony. 6 hours of battery life on a machine like that is just awesome! Although the Asus was my alternative to the MSI.

From this PDF file of MSI laptops to be released.. there will be an MSI 1024, which will be using integrated graphics (ATi xpress 200m).. and later an AMD one (I think the new duo core Turion).. no idea what card (if any) it will be using.

I think the 1022 was out alot longer in Europe too, not sure why it took so long to come to our shores :(

Picking one up with the next Turion would be great, especially if it includes the new hyper transport system that AMD is perfecting. That is supposed to give Intel a real run for their money.

Stay tuned here and I'm sure you will hear just as soon as MSI makes any info available.

    Note:

I've sent an email to my contacts at MSI to see if I can get any more info.

if this makes your decision harder.. there were several Quanta, and Uniwill 2006 models displayed in Taiwan that are also 14" (no idea on vid card)..and you can be sure Compal will release a new one too! :p

I also can be sure that come that time they are all released, poor Unleaded will probably carry all of them and will be flooded with comparision questions :p

i'm very happy to see that since the 1022, alot of MSI's models have the vent on the left!! :base:

never really heard of quanta or uniwill, ive read the review on the compal

at this point im not really sure which laptop ill get and im gonna wait til at least mid summer...

i think the idea of x1600 in the w3j just caught my eye but the sony sz is the ultimate portable at only 4 lb...in the end maybe the msi will be the middle ground and 500 dollars easier on my wallet haha

I wonder how long till these new ones get released? I think I might break down and get a 1022 if they are a long way out.

I'd definitely wait, not sure what your budget is but if you're like me and looking for a portable yet gaming laptop (judging from your interest in the 1022 i'm assuming this) there are definitely some great options coming such as the w3j and the updated versions of the 1022 and the sony sz is already out

Kreidel/bob, i'm in the same boat as well. I have no working computer at the house right now and was going to purchase the ms1022 :/ If the wait is only a nother week or 2 then i'm definitely gonna wait, however, if its months from now, I'll have to just get a fully decked out ms1022.

This is becoming excruciating!!! I don't really 'need' a laptop. I just want one for the sake of convenience, and for the sake of not having to share our lone desktop computer with my wife, since we often seem to want to get on the computer at the same time!

For a while I wanted the Sony BX with an X700. Then I was dead set on the Asus W3J as soon as I heard about it, but now MSI is messing up the process by soon releasing an updated 1022! Aaaaargh! Will I ever be able to decide???

Well, I would like to see these beats released and actually see some reviews and benchmarks before I decide. Then again, by that time we will probably know all about the new AMD dual core 64 bit processors, not to mention Meroms... I wish I really needed a laptop right now - that would force me to decide!

it will be much longer than a week or 2 for the next model. The 1039 may or may not be out in late February/Early March, but no indications of any models soon after that.

to both of you.. have you ever considered moving up to a 15.4 like the MSI 1029? i'm in a similar situation, can't decide between the two sizes. Personally I think they're not that big a difference in size.

defsquad: if you don't have a working computer in your house, you should be ordering right now haha, or at least grab a w3j in 2 months so you've got the next gen of gpus

kreidel: not so sure about your situation, if your in my situation, looking for a long term solution, you should definitely wait...i dont have 2000 dollars to throw around every 2 years (although i did spend 1000 desktop + 400 lcd 2 years ago haha). I'd wait at least for the next gen of gpus x1600s/ge7600s

jabba: yea, i've read your posts about the bx x700 but it seems like you're dealing with your situation alright otherwise you would be needing a laptop if the desktop sharing wasnt working out. Until your situation turns dire, you and I can enjoy watching the advancing technology of these little toys

goren: after reading reviews for the v6va and sager 5720 (only 7.5lb!), i did start considering getting a 15.4 but the really important factor for me is the weight. I set myself a 6lb limit because I like to take my laptop to the library and work there and possibly to class (im not currenlty taking my 8lb celeron toshiba around)

there are sub 6lb 15.4 options but most of them are over $2000, so that leaves me with the 14" form factor where the w3j, sony sz (configured to less than 2000) and updated 1022 will all fit in my budget

of course the one constant is a strong gpu

I have a question on the MS-1022. What is the "turbo cache" associated with the Nvidia GPU? Is that shared RAM ander another name?

yep, basically the ability to use the system ram along with whatever dedicated amount it's got.. which is why having a gig would be a good investment

mmm looks decent....however 6.5lb is a lil heavier than what i really want i really want something sub 6 lb....its 3Dmarks05 is on par with the HP Dv4000 which is significantly cheaper (based on the list price in that review)

I guess that's a good way of looking at it. With so much new tech being released these days it's nice to be able to sit on the sidelines and just pick your entry point.

    So, should I wait for a 1022 Merom...? :D

the thing about waiting is this... you'll always see something on the horizon thatll be better. so ask youself, "what do i want now?". me personally, i dont care too much about dual core. i have a 1.6 M and i'm happy :). just gotta decide when you feel liek taking the plunge, cause something better will always be out there

A couple things to note (since I wrote the review, after all):

-The list price was largely due to my getting a 3-year warranty, and getting the 120GB Seagate Momentus, which is a great hard drive, but godawfully expensive; I consciously splurged on that bit.

-You really won't notice much of a difference between 6.5 and 6 lbs. I carry my KN1 to class every day, and the weight doesn't bother me at all. Hauling my old 8-pound Toshiba, now that was a chore.

You're of course absolutely correct. My comment about waiting for Merom was tongue-in-cheek and was actually meant to illustrate that exact point. :)

However, when I eventually buy a laptop I would like to have something that includes mostly up to date technology. I like to keep things I buy for a very long time, so I figure the laptop I buy now should at least last me a good 6 years. Our desktop is a Pentium III that I bought in 2000. I have since upgraded numerous components (e.g. ATI 9700 Pro), and it's still good enough for our use. If we buy this updated 1022 it will be a major upgrade over the desktop we have, which means we can keep the desktop even longer as a second computer for word processing and web browsing. I tried running Doom III, but that game will have to be put on the shelf for now until we perhaps get this 1022 (W3J is also a strong contender).

hahah i got an old toshiba 8 pounder as well actually its not old its 2 years old and i'm still using it but thats besides the point...celeron piece of crap

jabba: seeing that the 1022 has a 6200go i dont think you'll be running Doom 3 too well on a 1022 as in low settings....the latest thinkpad review t60 shows doom3 running smoothly at medium settings....with an x1400....the 1022 only gets a 3Dmark05 of 1000

I'm referring to the rumour in this thread of an updated 1022. I'm assuming that will come with something better than a 6200. Especially with Asus raising the bar with the X1600 in the upcoming W3J. Since that is not due until late March, I'm hoping we will know more about the updated 1022 by then.

I hope we hear a little something soon. I need a notebook soon and was considering the 1022 but am hoping for a little better gpu in the next model. All I need the gpu for is HL2 and Call of Duty 2 but the possibility of handling a future game would be nice..

It's ashame we have no new information about this. I am sure this refresh will get passed over by the W3J since the W3J will be released before we even get new info on the updated 1022.

Join the club! Two weeks ago, it was the Z70va, then the Z63a, then the W3j, then I couldn't customize it at purchase, then to the 1022, because of peeps on this board and thread helped me to "scan my horizon" and it's just hard when you have to work within a budget, too. :)

I spent the afternoon at my local C_USA just getting the feel of these sizes, and you really get the appreciation for "lightness"...

yep i'm in the same boat. I don't neeeeed a laptop, (i'm typing on a fujitsu s7020d) I just want a new one. z63a, z62f/j, ms-1022 barebones are the current favorites. I think if msi comes out with a core duo ms1022 that's going to be the one.

Lightness is huge. That's why i got the fujitsu but the sonoma model is too hot for my tastes. I like that the ms-1022 is a half pound lighter than the similar asus models.
