    HUSTON - WE HAVE A PROBLEM !!!
I really was looking forward to upgrade my gx740 to 6970m or at least add some more radiators onto the gfx heatsink.
Sadly i find my self unlucky, becouse everytime i buy something, it turns out that i have something unusual/not to standard. Today, is a sad day for me.

I just bought a kit of 2x4gb hyperx 1600MHz memory (8gb total) to spped up a little bit. For more intrested users manufacture code is KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G.
I bought them for 71GBP total with delivery -NEW ONES, and since i bought my laptop, it was opened just ONCE, - IN MSI HQ to fix my 5870m -deffective from new. I didn't open it myself till tooday - SAD DAY FOR ME.

YEYE, i'm so ExCited !!, 1st screw, 2nd, 3rd one, 4th one, UH! its hard to remove back cover, kind of jammed, but NO, it went out nicely. And then i said LOL !!! LOL !!! WHY MEEEEE ????

Nerds from MSI gave me a new GPU heatsink, THANK YOU, IT DOES NOT COVER THE RAM AND IT IS NOT MADE FROM COPPER - THX- MSI.... TOODAY friday the 13th U MADE ME HAPPY ONCE AGAIN.

Now question to you GUYZ, can i take it as an adventage ? or NO ?
First, i thought about removing excess heatsink panel to reveal whole RAM and add a nice COPPER Radiator on it, i could also add some radiators onto NOT MADE FROM COPPER GPU heatsink. DDR5 mem modules are generating lots of heat ? - NOT, if my card is doing fine without any radiators on them i could take an advantage of it as gpu and ram could be cooled separately.... hope i am right.

HOW DO YOU ALL THINK, I SHOULD BE UNHAPPY OR NOT ?

I'm not familiar with GX740, but let other say do they have the same heatsink, or yours is changed?

I have done some research on the internet before, i seem to be the only person with this crap. Everyone else has a copper heatsink witch covers gpu ram as well.

normaly the copper heatsink is installed...maybe you got an pre mass production sample?! is yours an older one or one of the last produced?

btw 820 Chip @ 1,15v is real high no lower voltage is working at this level?!
    and 0,9v @ 100 is although very high...mine is running 0,65v @ 100/150 :D

man i hate this MSI GDDR5 mine goes never above 1040Mhz stable.

I'm suprised they relased the Akoya with the 5870! Is it still silver? Might have to ditch my GT729 mod after all... /drool

As for your heatsink issue, having a copper/aluminum heatsink isnt a bad idea, it techically gives you the best of both worlds. aluminum can absorb and dissapate heat faster, while copper absorbs it slower and takes longer to dissipate. In effect you can technically keep your card cooler...

As for your rage concerning temps, I guarantee you can drop your temps considerably if you clean the gunk the repair reps use on your card and drop some arctic silver in its stead, you will have a MUCH cooler card. As for your ram issue, I had the same... I was unimpressed with the heatsink, it looks almost like the one used on the GX720. half covering the ram with massive heatpads. Very unimpressive.

You can cover the rest alternatively, since there is enough clearance between the ram and the cover of the case, with a set of small ramsinks, Arctic cooling make wonderful little tiny blue ones with fins that shoot out in every direction, I in fact have several on my 4870. But the main thing is getting rid of the paste. After then can you truly judge your card/cooling performance.

As for the voltage, are you talking about volt modding your card? I'm having a bit of trouble understanding you through your rant.

    That is the WRONG heatsink.

Your VRAM is hardly being cooled at all and it is in danger.

This heatsink was almost definitely for the gts 250m MXM A card released in the gt740.
If I were you I would RMA it again before you get too deep into cooling mods, and start fresh with the all copper heatsink. Someone definitely screwed up putting that heatsink there.

I am just telling that loads of people are modding their vbios to get higher voltage on GPU core. My vbios was not modded at all and it automaticly rizing it to 1.15v if i go more than standard 700Mhz on GPU. So whatever i go 705 or 850mhz i got 1.15V.

As to the calling MSI and asking them for replace the heatsink, they'll gonna ask about "is it runs stable" - well yes it does, but then MSI people will say that if everything runs stable then haetsink is OK and we dont need to replace it.
Should i LIE ? and tell them that i have stability issues when playing more than 1 hour when summer just started ????

Just spoke with MSI HQ service team. If the problem is about not to standard heatsink and the GPU overheats couse stability problems- they will change it, but i have NO STABILITY ISSUES ? What i should do in this situation ? overclock to 900/1100 and wait until card goes down (burn) and then give it to MSI telling that it is becouse not standard cooling ?

The problem is, if you see weird lines on the screen, it's maybe to late to simply exchange the heatsink. The VRAM may gone to hell.
Don't trust these stupid callcenter support noobs.
The GDDR5-VRAM becomes very hot and you don't even see this in any temp sensor.

Take a picture of your 'unnormal' heatsink and also attach some of a stock one. If they still don't see the failure.

I've attached a pic of mine.

Strange that we are not able co check the VRAM temps ? In GPU-Z in the sensor tab i have 3 different temps and one of them is @MEMIO temp - Is it memory temperature ?

No, all sensors are integrated in the GPU DIE (chip) itself. 'MemIO' is the memory controller.

Maybe he got a better material that is more conductive?

    Silver? :D

Copper is 2x conductive as aluminum. Silver is about 10% more conductive than copper.
