I always suspected but never tested my USB ports, now that I bought a 30 gig ipod, it looks like it'll take about 6 hours to transfer a couple thousand songs? WFT? Is the MSI MS1013 USB 2.0 or not?

The rest of the notebook seems up to date...it wouldn't make sense to put in USB1.0 at all. I remember a thread either at Dell or HP made by someone with the same problem - ended up being an issue with the chipset that caused it to run at USB1.0 speeds. Absolute rubbish that needed to be fixed. See if you can dig up some tech info on that to ask MSI about.
