Troubleshooting GT62VR - Powers On No Display

As title basically. I was using it normally and suddenly the display just went blank while the back lights were still on. I tried a hard reset via power button and the same behavior has persisted since.

All of the buttons on the keyboard work - caps lock toggles the indicator, numpad does the same, and ctrl + alt + delete also resets the laptop. Turbo fan also kicks the fans into overdrive and the LED zones work as well with the Steelsries button.

At this point in time I've tried hooking the laptop up via its HDMI out but nothing shows up even when doing FN+F2, removing the battery and doing the EC reset with a paperclip, none of those things produce any different result. I don't see any display so I am not sure if the laptop is even successfully posting or not.

The laptop is way out of warranty at this point so I'm wondering what I can do as an end user to try to troubleshoot and/or fix the device on my own.

So you get no screen at all not even a power on for the bios?

If that's the case GOU has failed which is replaceable.

What GPU do you have a GTX1060/1070??

Hyperlink doesn't appear to be working properly, but it's an older unit with the 6700HQ/1070 combo.

The system powers on but I never see the MSI logo with the spinning dots and spamming delete doesn't bring up the bios, it's just the LEDs coming on along the edges. I've tried shining a flashlight against the screen as well and cannot make out any image at all. Hooking the laptop up via HDMI to an external display yields nothing as well.

Is there anything else I can test on my part to confirm the diagnosis before shopping for replacement parts? It would suck if I end up buying a replacement GPU and it turns out it's something else that is the cause.

Not sure if the GT62VR has a mux switch or runs optimus or just uses the dedicated GPU. You could try removing the GPU and cleaning the contacts on the card then placing it back in.

 

Unfortunately the smaller models didn't come with a mux switch, why? I have no idea would have been better for battery life but would cost performance I guess.

@crrayzmentos I reckon that GPU is dead as my GT62VR and Eurocom Tornado F5 did the same thing without a gpu inside, black screen but booted fine. You can try removing the GPU and putting it back in as @hacktrix2006 mentioned, this could possibly fix the problem. MSI GTX 1070 cards are not known to die easily though as they have robust vrms. Maybe the heatsink was making poor contact and after a while the card just died, it can happen, especially when the GPU is underload.

EDIT: There are 8 screws in the bottom cover, one underneath the warranty sticker. Remove the back cover and you'll have access to the heatsink. Remember to unplug the battery connector first, then unscrew the fans and then the heatsink.

Yep it would seem the VRM's on the GTX 1070 is nothing like whats on the GTX 1060 i mean my GTX 1060 is vbios modded for 134w adjustable. However i think its the GPU, although its not stopping the system from booting like it normally does when the GPU got short to ground.

 

I don't recall the GPU ever going above 65C so I don't think poor contact is the issue but you guys might be right and I need to crack it open to be sure. Hopefully a simple re-seat with new tim is enough to fix the problem, fingers crossed!

Assuming it is indeed the GPU is it really worth it to spend ~$500 USD on a 1070 replacement when I see some of the 9750H/2070 variants starting to dip into $1300 territory to make way for the 10th gen/RTX3000 combo?

So I had some time to take the laptop apart over the weekend. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary when I took out the 1070 - contacts were clean, not even dust was on it and nothing on the rest of the card appeared to be burnt or blown to my untrained eye. The only thing was that both the GPU + CPU clearly needed some new tim so I used some GC Extreme but no difference. With the laptop open I did the other troubleshooting steps - stripping all storage and trying to power the system on with only 1 stick of ram, tried every combo in each slot, and still no dice.

I really wonder what caused the problem though. It worked fine when I powered it on and it was only mid-way through some windows updates that the display suddenly shut itself off and never came back.

I've also had the time to look at some options on ebay/ali and I have a few questions:

- A lot of the supposedly compatible mxm 1070 do not have the MS-1W0V1 on the PCB. Would the general N17E-G2-A1 model I see commonly be compatible?
- I see that most sellers do not include pads or include generic silica pads, what thickness should I be looking at if I'm trying to get something like Gelid's?
