    Hello all,

I bought about 18 months ago a Asus G1S with a 8600m GT that went faulty. I had it replaced with a G1Sn with a 9500m GS. Although I thought at the time it was a good switch, I was dissapointed by the GPU performance, mostly due to the switch from the DDR3 in the 8600m GT to the DDR2 in the 9500m GS. As much as I try to live with the switch... I... am... just... dissapointed.

Basically, the specs for my G1Sn are T7500 @ 2.2 ghz with at 9500m GS DDR2 512Mhz. Screen is 1680x1050. I upgraded the RAM to 4 Gb and the HDD to a 160 Gb 7200 rpm.

Now, I was looking at the MSI GX620. Specs are nice and I can see a nice bump in the HDD, GPU and CPU (320Gb 5400 rpm, 9600m GT and P8600 respectively). Same screen resolution. The rest of the specs are basically the same.

I think after selling my G1Sn, I would have to shell about 250$ CAD to buy the GX620.

Questions are: Would you do it? Would you spend about 250$ for this kind of update?

Anyone here can comment on the GX620?

Considering that the only difference between the 9500m GS and the 9600m GT in the core is clock speed, I would not do that.

Doesn't the 9600m GT has GDDR3 as opposed to GDDR2 for the 9500m GS?

I know that moving from the GDDR3 to GDDR2 had a huge impact on performances on my laptop...

The memory type is different, but the GPU core is the same.

Like I said, I, myself, would not shell out $250 for an upgrade like that.

why don't u just buy a barebone from OC here on the forum and look for cheap parts? you can make one much better than your G1Sn for atleast 700USD. i spent 724, my laptop is in my sig.

I thought about the barebone idea. One thing you have to keep in mind though, with the USD-> CAD exchange rate, computer parts for me are a bit more expensive than they seem.

but, I have to admit, this might be another possibility

... i just checked the GX620 / MS-1651 specs... and the width of the laptop is about 14.75 inches... which is 2 inches more than my G1S(n).

... i just bought a Pakuma Choroka K2 for my G1Sn... Although the cocoon width of the bag is 14.75 inches... it will never fit in it as my G1Sn can barely fit in width...

    ... dang!

that means... buying another bag too!

    @vinceboiii

thanks for the advice. I just checked OC's thread... and it's really tempting. I can even hold on for the Wifi (for now, laptop is mostly on my desk) and the HDD (already have a 160gigs in an external enclosure) to save a few bucks.

... and of course... it doesn't please the girlfriend at all...

but if I can break even by selling my G1S(n) and buying either the barebone or the GX620, that would be nice.

I tried to configure a MS-1651 from the most reputable vendors on this forum, and unfortunately, it becomes too expensive. i may end up buying the GX620 (goes for around 900$ USD in Kanada) if I can't get my hand on a barebone at a decent price. Plus I have to sell my G1S(n) on time.

I might consider buying JUST the barebone ASAP and wait for the rest of the parts until I sell the G1S(n)

I'm sort of like the same boat than OP...

But in my case I have an Asus G1S which I love and works wonderfully (I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that got a good GPU) but the MSi GT627 got my attention.

I know I can sell mine for about $900 and I'm willing to shell about $200+ for the non BlueRay version since I really don't care about movie watching and 1280x800 would not tax the game graphics as much as the 1680x1050 does.

Honestly, I don't think I would have thought of switching my G1S if it still was a G1S... the 9500m GS is just killing my enthousiasm for this laptop now. And like you, I may only need to shell about 200-300$ to get a GX620.

I may wait and see how much is the GT627, but since I don't have a lot of money to spend to change my laptop after only 18 months, I may go for a GX620.

    Here's the price on NewEgg.com.

I'm seriously considering the GT627-216US since I think I don't need Blueray at the moment and higher resolution means lower performance on high end games to come.

    Thanks!

Well... eBay might be a good deal in the US... but right now, with a lower exchange rate than last year and huge duty fees, I don't think it's an option. Unless I can wire money to my uncle in Fla so he can buy it for me and bring it back accross the border.

Right now, I can find it for 920$ USD with the WSXGA+ screen before taxes and shipping, which brings it roughly around 1130$ USD (love the 12.5% taxes)

    must... sell.... G1S(n).... first...
