Looks like MSI is participating in the Free Upgrade Program!
MSI has added information to its global website:
http://www.msi.com/html/popup/win7/index.html
If anyone buys a MSI notebook after June 26th, can you please let us know if any packaging has any extra information about the upgrade.
Edit: Extra Info from CKDUBOIS:
-
I'm gonna buy mine soon, just gotta open a new bank account.
-
Awesome man, that seems a pretty kick deal! I know how well win7 runs on these machines.
-
Just to add one thing, if you bought your MSI between May 1 and June 25, you can still get the upgrade, just for $20 (US, not sure about other countries) instead of $10.
-
Awesome, that means im eligible for just 10 dollars more
Edit: wait, what if i live in Canada but bought the US version of the EX625? -
well, sorry about the noob questions, but:
1. i ordered my laptop on the 26th, and its coming in tommorow, am i eligable for the free upgrade?
2. what exactly is windows 7, is it better than vista 64 bit? -
2) Windows 7 is the new operating system, the successor to Vista. It has both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. It fixes some problems with Vista and is smoother to use. -
sounds great, so by extra packaging, do you mean they might have included the windows 7 disc?
-
btw, is windows 7 compatable with 4gb ram?

It really sucks how you have to register with msimobile.com to be eligible for the windows 7 upgrade. I purchased my laptop from newegg and can only register via the canadian msi website. However it is unknown whether the upgrade to windows 7 will be honored for 20$ or not.
-
I emailed MSI, they said they will be updating their website in the coming days, so hopefully our questions will be answered soon.

I purchased a GX620 from newegg last june 27 and I got it last july 2. There was nothing in the package about Windows 7 upgrade so I went to their website and I was disappointed to find out that aside from the requirements that Microsoft put out (1. purchased after june 26 and 2. having at least a vista home premium OS), MSI has specific models that they would qualify for an uprade and the GX620 isn't one of them. Most of the models that qualify are the ones that are not even out yet. I emailed them yesterday about this, still waiting for their reply.

you can't upgrade from 32bit vista to 64bit W7 right?
-
Is Newegg offering the upgrade? I don't see anything on their site about it.

can anyone confirm this applies to any purchases within the UK?
-
anymore news for Canucks with the $20 upgrade????
-
I purchase my laptop on the 26th. I registered my laptop and sent in the required forms for warrenty registration. After about 5 days a new option in my online MSI account offered the Win7 upgrade. There was two options a $10 and a $20 depending if you bought after or before the 26th.
-
with the coupon can you choose whether to get the 32-bit or the 64-bit version?

The Windows 7 Upgrade disks comes with both the 32 bit version and the 64 bit version.
However, only a version to version upgrade, i.e. 32 bit Vista to 32 bit Windows
will save all of your files
32 bit to 64 bit will have to erase everything. -
To my knowledge, these Windows 7 upgrade discs are just "upgrade" versions and not stand alone versions of the OS.
So if you have a 32 bit Vista, you can only upgrade to a 32 bit Windows 7, because even if you erase everything, the upgrade disc won't let you perform a clean installation of Windows 7 64 bit (assuming that both 32, and 64 bit versions are included in the first place). You'll just have to re-install your 32 bit Vista and then upgrade to 7 using the upgrade disc.
I am open to correction on this. -

Which login screen did this new option appear in? Is it the general msimobile.com login at the top right or the product registration login? I purchased by GX620-001US on the 25th registered and mailed in the form haven't seen any change its been about a week - week and a half.
Thanks -
It is in the product registration. You will see options like"register new product" and "upgrade warrenty".
-
-
-
did you mail in the info page within the first month?
-
@huckleberry2703
you said you mailed your form in and about 5 days later the link appeared?? I sent my in about 2 weeks ago. I guess they don't like me. I'll send MSi an email and see why they don't like me.
thanks -
Justsend them an email. they will reply within a day. usually around 4 pm ct for me.
-
Has anyone tried to apply for this in australia? I didnt recieve a form and like ca412686 I cant register because you can only select USA.
-
-
My link appeared! I emailed MSi yesterday and "Tom" replied back, and about 4 hours later a link "magicly" appreared in my options. Got my upgrade ordered and good to go.
-
hey mine finally appeared too and i didn't have to mail anything or contact them
$19.99 upgrade is listed
edit: how does it work exactly? you pay for the upgrade.. they send u a disc? and then u use the same serial for vista that came with your laptop for win7? do I have to use this disc or can i use a downloaded copy to install when it's released? -
to the best of my knowledge, according to the "great and powerful" MSi upgrade flowchart. MSi will mail you a claim card w/ a unique code and you follow link ( https://windows7upgradeoption.com/Landing.aspx) to M$ and put in your code. Approx 22-Oct M$ mails you your disc.
Looks like the card may have the W7 serial on it. We'll see when MSi mails out those cards. -
oh so you have to put your address in again on the M$ site? meaning you can get the disc sent somewhere else?
-
I just registered on the MSI website and added my laptop registration also. The link for the upgrade showed up the first time I looked at "My Products" (or whatever it's called).
I got mine before June 26, so I am eligible for the "$20" FREE upgrade. A $20 shipping charge for mailing a card seems like a huge ripoff! And they want me to mail the ORIGINAL proof of purchase - I already sent it in for my mail-in-rebate!
Edit: A previous poster and the CNET article indicates that you can upgrade to a "higher" version of Windows 7 or from 32-bit to 64-bit. But the MSI webpage on Windows 7 upgrade indicates that you can only go to the corresponding version and only from 32-bit to 32-bit. Anyone else know for sure which is correct? -
The $10 and $20 price is not set by MSI. This is what MS charges.
-
Has anyone received their "Windows 7 Upgrade Option Offer Form" from MSi?
-
Nope. Says that my bank account will be charged when its going to be mailed out. Will post when I get charged.
-
not to necropost or anything but didn't the GT 735 used to be on that list?
-
http://www.msi.com/html/popup/win7/nb_list.html

Got an email from MSI telling me that wy Windows 7 has shipped!!!
-
