Hi Guys,
Well, now that the cat is out of the bag, I can now happily say that this is the new MSI flagship I've been teasing about...... and precisely why I had to forego the current flagship, the GT70 Dominator Pro. MSI has taken interest in our concerns, they have been listening, and the new GT72 promises many improvements. Such improvements I immediately notice are:
1. Improved aluminum chassis sub-frame, greatly reducing weight.
2. Larger touchpad.
3. IPS matte screen.
4. More ports.
5. 220w PS.
6. Latest X-treme Core i7 revision. (Yes, I will be going X-treme this go-round)
7. Revised Steelseries keyboard, with improved support structure.
8. Dual fan cooling solution, with improved chassis vent design.
9. Re-designed chassis, and finally a new model designation.
10. And the latest, and most powerful nVidia mobile solution at time of release. (Speculating a Maxwell family platform)
What’s not to like?
Did I miss anything?

What a beast. Really wish they would switch to a sane keyboard layout.

I.... like it? Better than the GT70

Optimus switch, interesting.

If it is still the same 880m GTX then i do not think it is worth it unless they manage to install a better gpu than the 880m like a 880mx or something or maybe sli since its so thick now and dual fans .
Gtx 880m unable to play watchdogs in ultra settings and still getting low 40+ fps only in high setting -

Lovely platform to upgrade though and GPUs should be installed as they are released

For Computex 2014, the pre-production GT72 was a teaser appearance, and equipped with the best GPU of the time. If you have been following the press info, much is still unknown about this model, and 'how-equipped' is always subject to change. My hunch is we will be pleasantly surprised when the GT72 is finally released, and I seriously doubt it will sport the Kepler 880m.

GT72
Launch in October 2014
CPU will be i7 4710HQ Soldered BGA CPU
GPU will be GTX 880M and maybe R9 M295X (Which is not 100% clear at this time)
Display will be 17" Full HD IPS
GT72 will weigh less than GT70
Here are the official pictures from MSI.
Cheers
As for the Optimus Switch, here is how it works:

Soldered CPU?
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, soldered CPU? This would suggest no option for CPU upgrades, which I seriously doubt MSI would do to it's new flagship. In every way, this notebook is slated to be a total upgrade to the current GT70 Dominator Pro..... not a downgrade, or even a mere refresh. I know mine will arrive with the latest Intel X-treme, so I guess that will be soldered too? NOT! LOL!
At this stage, I think it is good to keep in mind that early information is preliminary, and subject to change.

Do you know what the funniest thing would be was if the gtx 880M was the maxwell edition just no one decided to look under the hood cuz nvidia likes to confuse everyone (-_-)

i7 4710HQ will be the CPU used on GT72. Its a soldered CPU and unless MSI want to change the entire motherboard, they will stick with soldered CPUs.
Here is a screenshot from GT72

Not as expensive as I thought, but It's too soon to say something.

If that graphics selection is the real one then it's either optimus or integrated only, no different to the current setup.
-
It's not finalize yet and the inside news changes every week. -

GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Well if it's a soldered bottom-tier CPU, of course I will not be interest..... and this will make the GT72 nothing more than a downgraded GT70 refresh in my opinion. Sure, in some areas the GT72 has improvements, but a soldered CPU is definitely a step in the wrong direction.

Finally an IPS screen on something not 15" or smaller!!! I just wish we could get some high res options for extra work space!!

The panel manufacturers will get round to it.

Spoted a Qualcomm KillerN 1525 in there with 2x2 AC + BT 4.0
I also heard that CoolerBoost 2 is being reused this time again. Unless they put inside some big and really low rpm fans it can be annoying if only the CPU gets pushed and both fans start spinning.
Also a soldered CPU is kind of a deal-breaker in my opinion too :/
Intel getting greedy here eh? I hope that's not the case -
So 50 million dongs is like 2,400 dollars. I never thought I would say that.

I think it will be more expensive than those prices, at least in Europe.
But a "middle" version with i7 4710, 16GB and 880M for 1800€/2300$ would be nice. -
How many people have upgraded their CPU in their GT70? If I should guess percentage here, I think its between 1-10%. Probably on the low side.
Yes it is backwards to offer soldered CPUs, totally agree. The option should be there regardless if one will change the CPU or not. But its not entirely a bad thing. 4710HQ is a pretty good CPU and will not bottleneck the GTX 880M or the M295X. Mobile CPUs are pretty powerful vs our GPUs, while its the other way around for desktops.
My point is that the current model, with GTX 880M/R9 M295X get the i7 4710HQ. The next model, with Maxwell GTX 880MX and AMDs next architecture, will get Broadwell, which will be more powerful and will keep up with the increase in GPU power. It is however bad that MSI doesnt cater for those who do professional work and need a more powerful CPU for their work, but I guess MSI may have concluded that its mainly gaming the notebook is used for anyway.
I am not buying that Intel is forcing MSI to use soldered CPUs, because there is a ton of i7 CPUs that are standard and can be switched out. Sounds more like a business strategy, whatever that is, to use soldered this time. Maybe the motherboards are cheaper this way? Maybe its easier to deal with warranty? I dont know, but it is what it is -
It's confirmed the 880MX Maxwell? Some time ago I read something about a new mobile Nvidia top model, but I think it was a rumor.
-
Right now the only cards you get with GT72 is GTX 880M/870M (Kepler) and maybe R9 M295X (AMDs upcoming GPU) -

My problem is that the 4700 is the highest non iris pro soldered CPU. If there were a 4800 class non iris pro (so a different pad arrangement) possible I would not mind.

To me, it just makes more sense to stay with a socketed mainboard, producing only one mainboard for all SKU’s, rather than producing different mainboards for each CPU type. My understanding is the GT72 will have an SKU with the X-treme 49xx class, so I assume this will be with a socketed mainboard. Also, I understand the GT72 will first release with the GTX-880M, then later when announced, the GTX-980M (DX12, 2nd gen 'GM2xx' Maxwell)..... late 2014/early 2015...... and of course, I'll be waiting for the later.
We shall see!

Anyone know the dimensions?
Looks pretty cool but I can do without the red vent's/grill's on the back.

It will be interesting to look at panel options when it becomes clear which connector is used.
