So here's the secret.. Just do what Talon's guide on first page and Thanatospys' mod inf. If you're situation is same as mine and if you updated the 2 driver support (Intel 7 chipset, and/or intel management system) not released by msi. then better go to your msi model mainpage and install first the chipset then see on device manager if the standard vga is updated to 970m then that's it. But if not then update the intel management system.

There you go. I hope I gave some good information with this one.. Just go back to the basics when installing..

I think I'm going to get lots of likes with this one lol!!! joke

Yes! I knew it was probably just a simple driver issue. Thats why I figured a OS wipe would hopefully fix any driver issues you were having. Glad to hear its fine on Windows 7 as well. Now go enjoy that card!

It is really strange with GPUZ detection on the card, because it's not showing the rest of information such as Technology/Die Size, etc.
But glad that you finally got it working, good work.

I've looked at other users GPU-Z screenshots with the 970m and they are also missing that information. I'm thinking its because the cards are so new?

With the updated 344.80 drivers, shadow play is fixed for me. It was a performance killer on 344.48 for me. Just tested a round of BF4 now with the new drivers and it was fluid and beautiful.

On lv2go no need to search if you use their modified inf - just find a driver that has a modified inf and matches your OS. The recent drivers do support Vista/Win7/Win8 simultaneously. The inf includes about every hardware ID under the sun and if you do find an unfamiliar it will be added as fast as possible.

Just download the 344.80 driver Thanopsy linked. Attempt to install the driver, it will extract it contents to a temporary install folder, and then the installation will fail. This is normal. Now copy the INF code Thanopsy linked as well. Go to the temporary install folder location, go into display driver folder, then find nvdispi file and open in wordpad. Delete the entire contents of the file, and now paste the copied code into the file. Click save as and overwrite the existing nvdispi file. Now disable digital driver signing and reboot. Now go back to the temporary install folder and click the setup.exe and run as Admin. Done.

does this apply to upcoming nvidia drivers? just copy paste thanospys modified inf to the original one then that new driver is good to install?

I want to see your msi afterburner screenshot to see the frequency of gpu and mem speed when you oc/tweak on that card. But on default, this card is a monster to games :)

I didn't make a fresh install of windows. I just re-installed the intel 7 chipset provided by msi then everything worked.

None of MSI NBs has HDMI 2.0.
All of them use HDMI v1.4, which supports 4Kx2K output.

4k out for me at 60hz would only be supported by the display out I believe. But that is already occupied by my 144hz screen. I can't go back to 60hz anyways after having 144.

Yup! Kevin is right. HDMI and DisplayPort connections are linked directly to the PCIex port, and thus get controlled by the Nvidia card (Meaker keeps repeating it always :p). The Intel iGPU is responsible only for the internal LCD controller (Optimus limitation) and for the older VGA port.
No HDMI 2.0 for notebooks on this generation. Maybe future products will feature it but as I see it DisplayPort is better suited for that task for its higher bandwidth and versability (simultaneous Half-Duplex data incluing USB, 16bit video resolution and up-to 8-channel 24bit uncompressed audio). Also the connector is used even for Intel's Thunderbolt HDD connection (on Apple products for now).
I think that in the future we will have only 2-3 types of general-purpose connectors (one dedicated for audio+video) (one exclusively for data and syncronisation) (the last one for networking) :)

    @Omega,

Instead of providing you with just a screenshot of my GPU-Z, I made a BF4 video with High settings, and then switch to Ultra settings. The video card is OC to +135/+100mem. Luckily shadow play was just having issues with the older driver, but seems to be working perfectly now. So I think the performance loss should be very minimal compared to when not recording with it. The only thing I still notice is that it can cause a slight microstutter once in awhile. I've always seemed to have that issue, even with my older 780m.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsQgpBDOW1Q

Make sure you select 1080p 60FPS to see it in all its glory.

I think it shows the 970m is a beast of a card. Stayed pegged at full clocks and awesome temps the full 18min video. I love it.

Hey guys is there any way to just buy a new GT60 heatsink anywhere? If you could just buy one of those you could skip doing the modding(even though it is simple) and literally only have to worry about the thermal paste and vbios.

At this time they aren't available anywhere. Obviously we would have gone that route if they were lol. Eventually they should be fairly easy to find, but for now supply is pretty tight on them and I'm assuming MSI is doing that purposely. MSI doesn't want an older 16F3 Ivy with an Extreme CPU (overclocked of course) beating on their flagship GT72s.

Give it time and eBay and laptop part sellers should have some available for sale.

So we have another GTX980M confirmed and running in my lappie. It went smooth without any hickups and no problems with drivers at all. Using Win7 x64.. here´s some quick test and now I go for FC4 to test it properly :-D

Amazing! Congrats Troy! Can run a few benchies and test out the temps on that system. Post some screenshots with your results and temps, or just report the scores and temps. Your laptop should be an absolute beast now. Did you happen to take any pictures of the small heatsink mod? Any and all information we share with others will help them out, and also give them more confidence in completing their own mod.

Hey everyone! Just want to make a little report as for temperatures.. will run more benchmarks a bit later. But I have to say that in Far Cry 4 after hour of intensive gameplay temps dropped 10 degrees celsius on GPU (used to have 95 with GTX780M now 85 max) so that is awesome! I repasted even the CPU and now am 5-6 degrees lower then I used to be. So don´t worry about temps even if you buy a GTX980M because it´s still lower on temps than GTX780M!

As for the install I have done everything that you (Talon) advised and it really went smooth. You just have to get rid of a little part of heatsink to fit all in.. then just some thermal strips, thermal paste and you´re good to go
    :)

I recieved package from Nexoc.de today and it was really well packed. One smaller box in another far more bigger filled in with air cushions. So can only recommend shopping at NEXOC.DE ;-)

The card is the same for Clevo etc. with blue PCB and below is screen from GPU-Z. Everything is running on a MSI GT70-2OD. So anyone hasitating about upgrade DO NOT! My framerate in FC4 on max setting without anti-aliasing DOUBLED! So that should be enough arguments why to DO IT! :) It´s a beast :-D

Hi, I'm new here, Im the owner of MSI GT70 2PC with 870M and I would like to upgrade it to 980M, but I'm not good at technical things and not sure if it's possible. This is how my 870M looks like: 870.jpg

In compare to 980M and 970m pictures I noticed that there's 2 additional "black pads" on 980M: 980.JPG , while 970M architecture is more similar to my 870M: 970.JPG

Can you tell me if I would be able to make to upgrade to one of these beasts, what changes have to be made on my GT70 to fit them?

    Best regards!

Hey Scoorpy the difference is just in missing memory modules but the heatsink should be the same. So just "pick your path" and choose on of those bad guys ;-)Then just follow Talons first post to modify your heatsink to fit new card apply few thermal pads and off you go :)

Hello everyone, new here and this is my first post =)

I suspect that the graphics card (675m) on my laptop is going out (getting random BSoD while gaming -- tried fresh install of windows, old drivers, new drivers... everything I can think of and the problem doesn't seem to be going away. Uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and ran everything on HD4000 graphics and not a single problem... so that is what leads me to think it is the graphics card.

Anyways, I just wanted to get a confirmation from you guys if my laptop should be compatible with the GTX 970. My laptop is from Cyberpowerpc but based off the MSI MS1762 (which I think is the GT70?)

    Processor and Video card are:
CPU: Intel(R) Core™ i7-3610QM Mobile Processor 2.30 GHz 6M Smart Cache, Max Turbo Freq. 3.30 GHz
VIDEO: NVIDIA GTX 675M 2GB PCIe Video (NB-366-202)

From what I've read it seems (short of probably needing to mod my heatsink) there shouldn't really be any problems?

Thanks in advance! I read all 24 pages and theres a lot of good info here!

Just like mine? Will an xm cpu be an advantage if i have funds to get one? or get an msi-raid card that will optimize my system? Although I'm on ssd but not on dual raid. I've read on the internet several months ago that you can raid 0 a single ssd but tedious to do though...

I will post some ss on 3dmark13 soon. Can't wait to benchmark this baby hehe... btw :)

with this settings, the card still runs cool? My 970m still a virgin though.. I'm not using the afterburner yet because on ultra settings when playing games (metro LL, C2, Tombraider 2013 etc) still is fast.. Shall I divirginize my card now? lol

Gratz Troy. I knew you where brewing something that you went quiet for some time hehe... Btw .. My 970m isn't a beast anymore? Getting jealous about your 980m lol

    Hi dgs

Yes your notebook (MS1762 board GT70) should be compatible with the 970m and it should run fine with modded drivers. Power wise the 970m is leaps and bounds more efficient than your current card. And performance is almost double.
Regarding the heatsink I'd advise you to get a 770m/780m heatsink as yours is a bit different from the newer models and maybe some component placing is different too.
Get the card, mod the heatsink & drivers and you're good to go! :)

    @Troy-C

Congtratulations man. Nice job. The pasting should be good too to be able and reach those temps on FC4 (pretty demanding game GPU wise).
What thermal paste did you use?

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I tried looking around a little bit but had trouble finding a heatsink for the GT 70 / 770/780/870 etc ... any recommendations on somewhere I could buy one? I saw some on Ebay but all of the ones I saw were quite over priced it seemed (In the 100's).

@Omega, you would probably see some benefits from upgrading your Ivy Bridge CPU depending on which one you currently have. If you have the cash and plan to keep the laptop for a good bit now, I would probably try and jump on an XM CPU and Overclock it. If not maybe just a 3820 or 40 and overclock that with its unlocked multipliers.

Yes the temperatures and clocks are all shown in the video via an overlay. Both the CPU and GPU stay nice and cool throughout the entire video. Its also fully stable at +135/100mhz overclock. I have a feeling it can do much more even on stock voltages. We just need an unlocked vBios to tap into its potential and get past the 135mhz lock. I agree the card is very fast even at stock settings, but with how cool its running and stable and @ stock voltages overclocking it shouldn't hurt anything. Its usually when you start pushing up the voltage and temps that things can wear out and fail.

I found a used one on ebay for around $35? a couple of weeks ago, but I pointed it out to Omega and I think he bought it. Used would be ideal because you are going to mod it anyways. Why buy new just to mod it. Keep an eye out and you will find a deal.

    Edit:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Origina...=100011&prg=11353&rk=1&rkt=10&sd=271658642597

$87.00 after shipping. Sort of expensive IMO but if you can swing it and need it now.

I got that 35$ that you linked to me.. Later I am going to dremel it when I get back home..But I did a mod with my current heatsink that used to house a 670m and is now perfectly attached to the 970m. .. But I will change it to the new heatsink that I bought after my dremel mod. hehe

So a mobile extreme cpu really helps too right ya? ok then i think thats the last upgrade for my gt 60. But for now the 3610qm still is good for me :)

LOL just like a spider with a fly caught in its web. "I'm going to dremel it later... :p"
Ok back to topic :) An extreme CPU will not bottleneck the 970m as with its larger cache and higher peak clock will be able to feed more data during the most demanding moments of a game (hardware wise).

I believe that any GTX970 and 980 is a beast! ;-) I had to leave work one hour earlier to get it all fitted in :-D Complete obssesion! :))

Hey Felix I used Gelid GC-03 Extreme .. It made a quite difference in hand with lower heat from the graphics too ;-) Wasn´t even thinking about Collaboratory Liquid Ultra because it could short anything on the GFX or CPU and I wasn´t willing to risk that at all ;-)

No no no liquid metal is out of the question on these bare GPUs/CPUs we use on notebooks. If you look carefully there are some tiny capacitors around the core that, once shorted, you kiss your precious 600€ card goodbye and we don't want that!! :)
I should have some spare IC7 tube around. Maybe I'll use that.

A question for you guys: I'm planning on switching my DVDRW drive with an HDD caddy. What height should I get? 9.5mm or 12.7mm? I aint home right now and can't take measurements.

Felix just one offtopic question. I see in your signature that you got 2TB WD 15mm HDD fitted in. Did it fit without any problems or any modifications were required? I´m now on a Hitachi 1TB 7200 RPM drive but still fighting for space eventhough I have some network drive and external USB :-D

and what are the different kinds of thermal pastes ? what is liquid metal ?
