At the suggestion of -=$tR|k3r=- , I figured I would create an Owner's Lounge. I received my 683DXR today, and it is awesome! :) Feel free to post benchmarks, pics, or just discuss anything and everything about these models. I will most likely update this OP as we go along.

Hopefully this thread will be a resource of information for those that have one of these, or are considering purchasing one in the future. :D

Attached to this post are screenshots of 3D Mark 06, Vantage, and 3D Mark 11. All tests were done at a GPU clock of 700 (Core) 1400 (Shader) 1800 (Memory) with a 2720qm CPU. The driver version was 275.50. I had to modify the .inf file to allow for the installation of the driver. No other changes were made to the driver package other than adding the Device ID to the .inf file

Vantage was also run with Physx disabled.

Congrats, I'm eying the model myself, I'd like to buy a laptop before next month for a trip. Would you be working on a review, benchmarks, pictures, etc. yourself? Curious how much you paid for it and where you got it from. I'm surprised you already got it today, when did you order it?

Not sure what I'm going to do yet as far as benchmarks and whatnot. I don't have alot of games, so it would probably be synthetic benchmarks. Not to mention, the machine isn't stock anymore. I put in a 2720 for the CPU.

    I paid $1599 for it at NewEgg. Here's the link: Newegg.com - MSI G Series GT683DXR-423US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 12GB Memory DDR3 1TB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M DDR5

They're currently out of stock though. I think they only had 5 in stock to begin with.

Without pics, I can tell you that I got 12400 in Vantage and 3400 in 3D Mark 11 with a overclock of 700/1400/1800 on the GPU. This was with the 275.50 drivers that I modified the inf to allow for installation.

    Hello Owners of GT683DXR,

I am planning to get this laptop next week. Please, can you provide us with very comprehensive review (I don't care to much about benchmarks as I am not a heavy gamer :) ).

In your situation, I would look at reviews of the older GT680 laptops. Really the only difference between them and this is a 560m vs 570m GPU. All the other features should be identical.

    Not only one:

    Differences GT680 vs GT683:
    - much better display (B156HW01 V5 vs LP156WF1-TLC1)
    - less flexy keyboard (only AWSD area has still more visible flexing)
    - better score in Battery Reader's Test (4,5h vs 5,5h)
    - newer BIOS

    Differences GT683 vs GT683DX:
    - better GPU (GTX 560M vs 570M)
    - larger and more efficient AC (150W vs 180W)
    - newer BIOS, which runs AC 180W

Keith1341. maybe one more 3DMark Vantage score with psyhx off mode ? :)
Can you post your monitor ID from Monitor Asset Manager?

Not, only GT780 has got SS keyboard, but I prefer GT68x's keyboard. Less waving, less flexy and no troubles with backlit.

    Tested three of them.

Hmm I see. I'm debating between the gt68x and gt78x. One one hand I want the portability of a 15 inch but the 17 inch seems more financially efficient.

The super high CPU score would seem to indicate the test was ran without disabling PhysX..... which will yield inaccurate Vantage results with NVIDIA GPU's. Could you do THIS, and run the test again?

Also, could you put GPU-Z in the screenshot too, so we can see the clocks you are you are running the benchmark with?

    Thanks!

By the way for those interested, Power notebooks has these in stock, but they have the one with only one hard drive, perfect for me anyway since I'm going to put in an SSD. It's also about 100 cheaper than the 432US version.

Ummmm, sorry, but I have to question this. HERE is a screenshot of a GT683DXR with a 2720QM, PhysX disabled....... as it should be when testing an NVIDIA GPU with 3DMark Vantage. This CPU score (19138) is more representative of what folks should be seeing of the 2720QM in Vantage. You can read of this in the FutureMark forums. Also, the 3DMark Vantage link you provided HERE, confirms this...... a 2720QM, Disabled PPU=True, CPU Score 19788.

dave-P's 3DMark Vantage test is showing an unusually high CPU score of 45088, which tends to indicate PhysX was not disabled for testing.

Thanks midzi and Keith1341 for the useful information you have provided us so far!

Some owners reported on Newegg that this model is made of very cheap plastic and this can be noticed when closing the lid. In addition, they reported that the machine gets hot and noisy with CPU-intensive games.

Can you please check this since I am getting a maximized version (FHD+SSD+16GB...) (cost 2200$)?

Any additional information about the model, would definitely help :)

    Cheers

I personally don't think the machine is made of cheap plastic, and I can't say that I've noticed anything flex or creak when closing the lid. If anything, I would say it is sturdy and solid.

The machine doesn't get overly hot when gaming. Personally, I think the machine does a darn good job at cooling considering how much high performance hardware is packed into such a small form factor. But that's just me. That being said though, the fan is noticeable. It's not as quiet as say a G53/G73/G74, but I wouldn't exactly call it a jet turbine either. ;)

You don't have to OC to game, and this notebook will game VERY nicely without OC'ing. Those who OC, simply want to explore the performance limits of the hardware..... but it's not necessary at all. This notebooks packs plenty performance!

As far as your backpack, this depends on the backpack's model. Take note of the GT683 dimensions listed in the specs, and compare this with previous 15" notebooks you've housed therein. If you have not purchased a backpack yet, I am sure there will be some good folks here, who would be happy to make a recommendation.

    :) :) :)

Overclocking can have nothing to do with gaming.

Overclocking is for PC hardware enthusiasts, just a lot of those tend to game as well.

This just occurred to me, but does anyone know if the version with only 1 hd comes with the 2nd HD caddy?

There is currently only one version of the GT683DXR and it has two hard drives installed by the manufacture.

I just can't make up my mind. I am stuck on choosing between a 683DXR and a 780DX

Same CPU, Same GPU. I like the 683's chassis better than that 780 and don't mind the slightly smaller screen but I do like the 780s backlist and customisable keyboard option.

    The 683 will come with 16gb RAM and x2 500gb SATA's. The 780 just 8gb RAM and a 750gb SATA.

They both work out about the same price. Which one would you go for

Do you want portability/more battery life or a larger screen.

Well to be honest portability is not a major issue. I won't be carting it around everywhere on a regular basis. The main reason I opt for a laptop over a desktop is the fact that I can only really have a desktop in the study and that means spending all my free time in there when I want to play or use the net. That results in my wife getting p@@sed with me and also makes it much more difficult to mind my two year old son. In the bedroom he has somewhere to play in the study he doesn't and just disrupts everything. I will only be taking the lappy out occasionally and will take it with me when I fly back to my home country to use.

As for battery life that doesn't really matter either as I tend to just leave it plugged in and rarely run solely from the battery.

I guess going for the bigger screen with less RAM and storage sounds like the best option the more I think about it. I live in China so buying RAM and HD's is a relatively cheap affair compared to elsewhere so if I find the RAM is not sufficient or I start running out of space I can buy some more.

I am confused like you between thr 17 and 15 inch models. But, I guess I would go with the 15 inch (GT683DXR) becuase it doesn't have backlit keyboard. A lot of owners of the 17 inch have reported that the SS keyboard has many issues such as fading light beneth the keys and some non-responsive keys. It is ture that these issues were in the GT783R, not in the GT783DXR, but I have doubts that MSI fixed it in this release.

There s also another issue in the 17 inch model, but cannot remembered now.

if anyone has purchase recommendations regarding the GT683DXR/GT783DXR model, please give it to us before we order :)

I struggled with that exact same question between the 15” and 17”. I ended up going with the 15 due to being slightly smaller and it happened to be a little cheaper and have a better config for what I wanted.

I know the size diff isn’t huge, but all of the 17” laptops I’ve had barely fit on my lapdesks and folding stands, with barely enough room for the mouse so that extra inch or two makes a difference in that situation. Plus my backpack will be smaller, hey it adds up. I have a larger screen at home for when I want a bigger screen.

I agree with the above folks. If every inch of portability matters then go with 15". If you plan to not move it much, and that small size diff doesn't matter, then go for the 17".

Also if the backlit keyboard is a dealbreaker then you have to go for the 17. I really wanted it, but not bad enough.
