Well I finally pulled the trigger on the MSI EX625 laptop. After doing research for a little over a year and I have found this one. Albeit it does have quirks, but I am willing to work with them. I plan on buying a P8700 and a 9 cell battery. Here are the specs: 16" WXGA screen | 2.0 p7350 processor | 4670 ATI Radeon Card | 6 cell battery | 5.95 lbs. I have bad eye sight so the WXGA I discovered is the best resolution for me. I should have it tuesday or Wednesday.

I think you bought a quality laptop. The only thing that bugged me was the touchpad being more to the left rather than being centered but I'm used to it now. I'm going to buy another processor as well. The P7350 is ok but need a little more speed and cache size. Hope you enjoy your laptop.

many people are saying the processor limits the performance of the video card. i'm wondering how worth it, it is to spend 2-300 on a new cpu.

The one big reason I bought the laptop was for the video card. If you look at notebookcheck.net you will see that for the price its a lot cheaper than most of your other laptops that have a lower end gpu. So in a since your paying for the video card, not the cpu.

yea, they sure are selling like hotcakes on newegg, about 10 a day are being sold and i have a feeling they won't be restocking after they sell out. The contrast ratio is apparently quite low for the ex625 too. I'm in a bad situation because i don't know whether i want to spend 1k or 2k for an asus g51.

    The contrast ratio is 16:9 (1366 x 768) which is a nice resolution for 16", better than 1200 X 800.

I couldn't really tell you yet as I have not bought a new processor to replace P7350. P7350 is not that slow and it is suitable for gaming IMO, but I would rather have a faster clocked processor with more cache, as I do lots of video encoding and a faster processor will help.

Sorry by contrast ratio i meant that the screen on notebookcheck gives a 160:1 contrast. Another laptop with twice the price however will have a contrast of like 600+:1. Regardless though at half the price, and about 6.5k-7k for benchamarks its about 65-70% the performance of a sager 8662... Its quickly running out of stock too.

Sounds reassuring. Thanks :D do you know if it will be faster than old gen processors... say the t7700?

I would say faster because of the FSB 1066Mhz.

Nah, I really doubt a boost from 800MHZ to 1066MHZ on the front side bus is going to out pace 400mhz clock speed.

Only till a certain extent, faster is always better in my book but the stock CPU is not that limiting.
I wish it came with a factory OC option like the GT627

Right that was my point. When comparing a T7700 (as bestbacon mentioned) to P7350, the clock speed does not really matter. Of course if it was 2.0 vs 2.8, thats a big enough difference to matter. The heatsink is so small on this laptop, I wouldn't dare want MSi to have an OC option for it.

i have yet to find a cheap P series processor anywhere. the p8600 is about $230 CA at its cheapest, and i the warranty is going to be voided if i do any modifications to the processor so i want to stay away from it.

It is going to be hard to find a cheap higher version of p series or t series processor. They are less common therefore cost more. Personally I'm going to get P9700 or T9900 even though that will be about $400-430USD but I think its worth it. I like doing upgrades and have done so with every laptop/notebook I have had. I always keep the original parts so if I have a warranty situation, I can get serviced.

IMO, if you want to mess with components then you should get a barebone instead. If you look around you can find the Compal KHLB2 for 450-500 bucks. Then add the components of your choice. End result is approximately the same cost but with better hard drive, etc.
The Compal is the barebone I'm leaning towards but there plenty of others.

Quick question that I can't seem to find the answer to. Does anyone know if I buy the EX625 from Newegg Canada and have it shipped up north if MSI retailers in Canada will honour the warranty, or even if my warranty is valid anymore?

I would rather not. Barebone is fine, but when I bought this laptop I needed it now not slowly building a barebone laptop and have to get various components. This laptop was a good deal so I got it. People upgrade their laptops all the time to get max performance from them. If I wanted a barebone I would got one. Thanks for your opinion though, it is appreciated.

There is nothing wrong with getting the EX625.
The main reason I raised the idea of a barebone is because some people are fretting about warranties and such.
The way I see it, if you are going to spend 2-400$ on a processor upgrade why not get every component to your specs when the net cost is the same. Your objection about needing to build it slowly with various components is kinda bogus though. You can order all your parts from the same place and get the at the same time you get the barebone. Assembly takes 30 minutes.
None the less, there is certainly nothing wrong with getting the EX625. I'm definitely considering it myself.

I understand where you are coming from and a barebone wouldn't be a problem normally, but it would have been more money than what I paid for this laptop to build a barebone. If I would bought a barebone, I would have to build it slowly because of money issues so components would be bought at different times which would not help me. Again I needed a laptop then and now which is why I bought this laptop not a barebone. This maybe an option for others right now but not for me. Maybe in the future :)

Bit of a hijacking of the thread... But officially the EX625 is a deactivated item on Newegg.ca and Newegg.com... It's finally out of stock and I decided to actively purchase one myself.

apparently this laptop is no longer available anywhere! it was still available on multiple sites late last night. i've been looking for a new one, and was seriously considering buying this one. I wonder if MSI pulled it for some reason. (one site i looked at said something about the distributor pulling the shipment)i also noticed that even MSI's site says "out of stock". Anyone know what happened?

realistically its actually $1033 for me and i live in Canada. If you really want the laptop, i wouldn't mind sending it to you after i receive it for the full price + additional shipping fee to your home. I might want to get the asus g51 anyways.

i don't think Canadians on newegg.ca can see open box items. i can't seem to find it anywhere xD on newegg.ca

Naw i think open box is just a returned product because it was to not someones liking within 15 days. chaotic's laptop was open box and his warranty sticker was still perfect and his laptop in pristine condition.
