Hello - I'm new here and new to msi. I bought an ASUS and returned for an msi gt780dx and am happy I did. The only thing I want to do now is swap out the existing matte screen for a 90% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy LCD (I do a lot of graphic work and glare/reflection is not a problem).

I was wondering if anyone has done this and what your thoughts were after you did? Evidently (I'm told) this swap will give me a much better gamut range and substantially more vibrancy. While the stock screen was very good, for my needs, this will be a substantial improvement... Is that true? Has anyone here done this who can comment?

You were wrong told. The matte screen of MSI GT780DX is one of the best that you can find on the laptop market. You will do the worst thing if you do replace it with a glossy screen, it doesn't matter that it has 90% colour gamut. The screen of MSI GT780DX is also with very high contrast, but the biggest advantage is that is matte, and is anti-glare. My computer is with glossy screen, and it's awful, so much pressure to my eyes, so I'll replace it very soon with matte screen or better to buy a new laptop with a matte screen.

Thank you but unfortunately I think your opinion may be clouded by the fact you simply hate glossy screens. For me, Glossy is all Ive ever used and personally, I prefer it over matte. That said, I'm really looking for an unbiased opinion of the stock matte screen versus the gloss screen mentioned and the resulting picture. Presumably, the gloss will have more pop, be brighter and will depict a brighter and wider range of colors - but with glare & reflection if they exist.

That said, I really not simply looking for someone to tell me what I hope to hear but rather a true idea of what to expect. I'm hoping some will chime in and say, either: yes, I've done this same thing and the result IS as expected above or No, I've done this same thing and the gloss screen is noticeably poorer in brightness, or contrast , or color, etc...

The laptop itself is GREAT and I just dont want to spend 200 bucks and not be happy with the choice because the end result for color, brightness, contrast, accuracy, etc is below that of the stock matte screen..... I for one, simply dont know....

    Thanks

Can't comment on the glossy screen, but I was able to upgrade my GT683 barebone model with a 95% gamut matte screen. Are there any matte screens available for the 780 with a high gamut percentage? That might be something to look into as I'm sure it would be much more desirable than glossy.

Its a glossy 90% gamut screen.

You are looking for the B173HW01 V4

Does matte finish itself vary in quality from different manufacturers?

I have a chimei N173HGE-L11 and I must say the colors and blacks are amazing but the matte finish makes it look awfully grainy and fuzzy.
I might even consider trying to remove the matte coating.

Anyone switch to or buy a "made to order" msi with a 90% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy LCD? I'm anxious to hear thoughts on this screen...

The screen upgrade to the 90% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy LCD (AU OB173HW01 V4) will do exactly what you suggest. You will see a much broader color gamut and the colors will be much more vibrant. While the standard Matte screen is good, it simply cannot match the 90% Color Gamut Glossy.

Donald - I've seen references to a 95% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy LCD. Would you know if that difference to the one you provide is noticeable and if so, do you also sell the 95% glossy lcd?

We do not sell the 95% glossy screen, and the 5% difference between it and the 90% screen would be virtually impossible to see.

    The 95% screen is a 15.4" model.
