I have a GS60 and wanted to know:

Is it possible to swap the Fn and Start button keys?
Is it easy to actually remove the physical keys from the keyboard and swap them around?

The keys are not designed to be removed. Which GS60 do you have?

I've seen this feature on some computers but I do not think the GS60 supports it.

This actually requires EC firmware to be modified.
The only person who can do it is Svet at MSI forum. You should check him out.

You cannot physically remap the keyboard by moving key caps. Placing one key cap in another's place does not change the function of that key. You'd have to have things remapped through the EC as Kevin pointed out.

Yes I am aware that the functioning of the keys needs to be changed via the EC Firmware, but I wanted to know if it was simple to remove the key cap by not damaging anything?

It needs to be done very carefully so the clip does not become damaged when the key cap is removed.

It's doable, albeit risky. The plastic retainer clips are fragile. I don't recommend it.

Yup, if one is broken the entire keyboard will need to be replaced because MSI will not send you a key cap to repair your keyboard.

Not terribly difficult. Just don't resort to force; tiny flat screwdriver is all you need:
    • Wedge underneath in middle of bottom-side; lift sufficiently so your finger has grip.
    • Gently move upwards and the bottom section pops free.
    • Do the same for the top-side of the cap; there's 2x2 clips keeping it fixed to the 2 parts of the scissor.
Scissor sections might detach from each other; they're held together with two protrusions midway. Bend a bit and they'll slip underneath each other. Properly placed they form a flat, uniform surface. To reinsert cap, just position in place and push down.

However, as mentioned, it will not change function. The 'Start' button can be remapped (e.g. via SharpKeys), but the Fn is special; it doesn't 'exist' to the OS:

Oddly enough, I updated my EC FW the other day, from the MSI website for my model, and ever since, the Fn and Windows keys have been swapped round. I'm not too bothered really, as I prefer it that way.

You can swap it back from BIOS if you want to.

I have no such option in my BIOS, although that is one thing I am yet to update since buying the laptop.

Edit: BIOS updated and the option is now there!

I always thought that in newest MSIs you can use MSI software to remap ANY key you want. Although yeah, Fn I would switch in BIOS if opportunity exists.

The previous version did not allow remap of Fn key, did the new version add support for it?
