    Dear all

Today when I booted up my MSI GS65 (with the 1070 max-q), it suddenly updated the firmware by itself immediately during the boot screen. After that it rebooted, and then it constantly gave me a BSOD with the error message: "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE". I was very close to just go for the RMA straight away, but then I tried to change the SATA-controller settings in the bios from "intel RST premium with intel optane system" to "ACHI". Now it boots normally. The only weird thing now is that the Killer Software says that it has detected a problem, but the Wi-Fi driver seems to work normally. If I change it back to the Optane System, it goes to BSOD straight away again.

I have no idea why my computer updated the firmware by itself. The computer worked completely fine yesterday and I have not updated the drivers or anything! Do you have any idea what has happened? And why does it go to blue screen with the "Intel RST Premium with Intel Optane System"? I'm not even sure about the difference between the optane system and the ACHI and whether it is important or not.

Maybe the automatic Windows Update has caused it? Or is it a hardware issue?

I really hope you can help me!

    Kind regards
    Peter

    I found this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=320406.0

Apparently Windows Update can automatically update your bios? I guess it is done for security reasons but I nearly though my PC was dead. Have you ever heard of that? I guess it explains the incident - for some reason it changed the SATA-controller options? What is the difference between AHCI and Optane?

Yup, from the look of it the firmware got updated and you were able to resolve it. For the software part, have you seen any errors shown in the device manager? How about removing the software and reinstall it?

Thank you for your answer, Kevin. The wireless driver is working. Do you know the difference between Optane and AHCI? Is there any performance difference? I only have one SSD (not raid).

The performance of the laptop seems normal, so I think the situation was caused by the automatic update.

Optane is for SSD Caching using Intel Optane SSD, see below for documentation. So you should leave it in AHCI mode.
