I read the official msi gt60/70 980/70m upgrade thread and already finished the heatsink mod and inserted my 970m card to my laptop, what i cant figure out is the next step, all the links to the modified inf and other downloads dont seem to be working. Also, for some reason whenever the 970m card is inserted, my resolution become really small 640x480, and the colors are all messed up, i cant change it. I checked my device manager and there is no category for display adapters at all, can anyone help me out?

Do you have 51X/71X BIOS installed?

Update BIOS & EC firmware first, then update to the latest version of Nvidia driver.
If problem persists, you may need the VBIOS update on your GPU card in order for it to become detected/supported by the Nvidia graphics driver.

I have tried updating the bios and firmware, but it seemed i had both recent versions. The two bios available at my laptop support site were 10u and 30u i think, my bios was 10u and i was told that updating to a different number like the 30u would risk bricking my system. I have tried though updating my bios to 10u even though its the same but no cigar. As for the firmware, my laptop says that it is also the most recent available. Where would i be able to get the vbios 51x/71x? which one do i need, the 51 or 71?

Yay! Thanks for all the help. I had to update both the vbios and ec frimware with a bootable usb since i could only use safe mode at the time since my laptop would freeze at loading screen. But after both updates everything seems to run smoothly :D! Only thing that worries me slightly is that the gpu temp is idle at 47-55C, not sure if thats normal, i had to stack a couple thermal pads for the smaller chips located at the top of the 970m card and am wondering if that is not a good thing to do. The small chips at the upper part of the 970m card i had to stack 3 pads and the smaller row of chips right below had to stack about 2, should i re-thermal?

Probably using a better thermal paste and pads you can achieve a lower operating/idle temp. I would suggest the Grizzly Kryonaut or the Gelid GC Extreme. Also the 14W/mk Fujipoly pads. Those cost a bit more but it will keep your machine running cooler :) What pads/paste are you using currently?
