I have stock setup except my GPU is clocked at 750/1000. I always hear people with gx640's maxing out starcraft 2 with 40fps+ however when i put my settings on ultra I get only 20-30fps. I dont get it, I have exactly the same specs as other people do but I get less performance? I am currently on 10.6 cats and power plan is on high performance and i play at native res. Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem or is this normal proformance for this laptop? I'm still on the stock OS so maybe i should give it s clean reinstall?

EDIT: also gta iv runs like on my gx640. It seems all the cpu intensive stuff runs like crap. I know for a fact that the i5 430m isnt too bad and should be able to handle current games. Im really not sure whats wrong?

Ya, I can run that game maxed-out without any lag on 625/1000. (No OC needed)

Did you update your drivers? That improved the fps a lot for me!

    From here:
MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

(Intel(R) 5 Series Chipset(v9.1.1.1027) and most importantly the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850(v8.732) driver)

If thats not it, then I would suggest you get cats 10.8 like me.

Hmm maybe you want to be trying to get the latest driver working stable, it should solve your problem, in the mean time make sure your on high performance so your cpu and gpu are clocking appropriately.

I'm assuming you said "runs like crap?" Well as far as GTA IV settings go you should go with the reccommended ones which will get you the best performance and it runs butter smooth for me. I'll have to try starcraft 2 to see what kind of performance I get even though I could careless about the game.

Thnx mate, i mean it runs horribly on preset optimal settings which is all high and some very high with view distance and detail around 40 i think (i get around 26fps average, that may be playable to some but i cannot stand it :/) I set everything to high and view distance and detail to 8 and now it runs smooth as around 33fps average. Im happy with GTA4 but starcraft still annoys me as i am a huge rts fan. I still get the feeling I am under performing for some reason, am i wrong?
Also for those of you asking what power plan im on i can assure you that its all on high performance and my components are clocking fine. Ive tried the gamer profile as well but no difference at all. Last of all I was on 10.8 before and i did not find any performance increase. If there was I would bear with the constant bsods. I decided to roll back to the more stable cats

hmm this is just updating catalyst install manager, im pretty sure that this wont solve the problem. Its wierd because i perform normally in bc2 but in sc2 and gta4 is under perform. Seems like all the cpu intensive games?

Did you try it? Let it install and then play SC2.

I got SC2 shortly after the game came out and just after I got my GX640. The game ran perfectly, maxed at 60 FPS most of the time.

About a week ago I loaded it up and was getting between 18-35 FPS out of the blue. I didn't change drivers or anything like that.

I did a couple of things that have resolved the issue (I'm getting 60 FPS again), although I didn't do it methodically so I can't say what exactly was ressponsible for the fix.

    I did the following:

I noticed that the game was slower after having install some windows updates from September 13th, I removed that update. I also went through the processes in task manager and turned off stuff that didn't appear to be needed, and also disabled those items in MSCONFIG. I also had skype running in the background, and I closed that. Since doing the above, it's been running perfectly.

My guess is that some process or another was periodically maxing one of the CPU cores, slowing the game down. I'm not positive, but that's my only explanation.

EDIT: BTW, I'm think I'm using the 10.6 catalyst/drivers still

I dont think its the update to.

Going into MSCONFIG is it then(if its not GPU drivers)! I did that one a long time ago(improves startup time to). :)

That was going to be my 2nd guess!

So I got around in trying starcraft 2, I played the first 2 levels with maxed out graphics. Seems like it's getting 60fps on explosions very little slow down. Not sure how it will hold up against more enemies/people on the screen. So yeah fresh install that bad boy.

Keep GPU Z open while gaming. I have noticed on mine that sometimes when I leave Google chrome or steam store app, my GPU clocks get frozen at 500/1000 instead of 700/1000 or my OC.

As soon as I close those things, I get my clocks back along with my fps. I first noticed it with crysis when I sometimes underperformed on the exact same place with no overheating etc.

Well ive done a fresh install and there are pretty healthy changes id say. On native res and high i get around 35-40 fps and this is when it is 4v4 with HEAPS of units (approximately 40 units per person). People who say they get 60 fps in this kind of sitaution are liars. Ive seen too many people go on about how this laptop can max every game out at a playable fps but the fact is that it cannot.

    I second that. ;)
not sure if it was exactly 60fps, but there wasn' the slightest bit of lag.(very smooth, could be that it just never goes under 30fps)

If you guys dont know. I always keep my res at 1680/1050 on the GX640.

-I have minimal things running in the background
    -My i5 turbo is on
-clock settings were at stock (625/1000)
    -latest drivers

Interesting story: My clocks got stuck at 500/1000 for a while for no apparent reason. I started closing windows in preparation for a reboot when I noticed that my clocks went back to their correct idle when I killed a window with thumbnails in it.

I had the same problem. Its a glitch with the idling speeds. my idling clocks were 400/1000.
