So after not getting a complete answer anywhere I decided to make my own thread.

This is concerning the GX740 (Radeon HD5870). Helpful hint: I am not an OCer. Might do it in future or just try it for fun but not for a while.

    1) Latest "VGA Firmware" was released a few days back on official MSI driver downloads site.
Why do these new GPU BIOS/Firmware keep popping up so frequently? Is it important to keep BIOS up-to-date? (I run at stock clocks)

    2) Where can I find a changelog or what's different about the latest release?

    3) Does MSI make/write these BIOSes?

    Thanks

    1)
It's important to keep your bios up to date becouse it contains bug fixes or improves stability/performance etc.
    2)
You should find it in the vbios specs, but sometimes you dont and have to work it out from forums what did they improve
    for example:
IMPORTANT: New GX740 VBIOS (7/2/2010) fixes overheating issues
    3)YES

But if you find that recent upgrade of your bios/vbios fixes just firewire issue or something else less improtant for you taht you don't really use/need - then is pointless to upgrade if you find it difficult to do.
But it is always recomended to do so and learn how to do it.

My experience with this may '11 VBIOS has been really aweful, as soon as i upgraded the system started to go into GSOD and locking up in around 10 minutes of playing any game (at stock 700/1000 clock speeds). Crashed immediately on OCing.
I rolled back to the previous VBIOS (the 1727_027)and everything is peachy now, tested Witcher 2, atittool to be running for an hour at stock as well as OC of 820/1035 and no problems/crashes.

Thanks flingin. Is there a thread like the one you linked to for the latest bios (I couldn't find one)? Or should I make one on msi to ask questions?

atomizer, I didn't know you could just revert back by reflashing with the old bios (I guess it makes sense now).

I guess I will wait and see how this new bios treats other people :p

It's bad. Everyone who's using it thinks it's bad. Don't wait, it's bad.

If you have no stability issues and temps are ok, just skip it for now.
    atomizer's right.
