From what I hear, MSI sells great laptops as they are a major manufacturer of motherboards (like Asus is). I'm waiting to see more reviews on this particular laptop since I'm very interested in it. Great features at a great price! The only turn-offs for me is the glossy screen and the battery extending out the back. What gives with that, anyway?

    kek101:

I am in the process of testing an MS-1036 in order to publish a review. I can say at this early stage that I am suitably impressed with this system and believe it to be solidly built and quite stable. MSI is, in my opinion, a reputable component manufacturer that has made a strong crossover into the whitebook realm, much like Asus.

All preliminary benchmark testing shows the MS-1036 to be an impressive performer with good battery life for this form factor (sorry the battery does bulge out a bit). The screen is quite good, better than other MSI screens as, though it is glossy, it is not overly reflective. The X700 benchmark are higher than other systems which use this GPU as the memory clock defaults are higher than most 15.4" systems and, due in part to the larger form factor, cooling is better allowing for SIGNIFICANT overclocking headroom.

Sandman, I replied to your PM and hope my answers to your questions are helpful.

Whether you should buy it or not and whether it's a good system or not have two different answers, I believe. However, I think MSI is going to be the "next hot thing". Their first laptops in this continent (like my own 1029) have some issues, but for a starter company in this niche those issues are so minor that the quality of the products overshade them completely. Right now, I would say they are the best bang for the buck at least in the mainstream sized market.

I agree, I see them being as the next "Asus"! and if ProPortable is right in that Asus will focus more on the Ensemble line than "Built On" line, more power to MSI!

btw, how's the screen on the 1029? I've heard that MSI glossy is really glossy.

It's great! Lots of glossy goodness, very few reflections. Some find the resolution too low, but since I'm already using glasses when working on computers, it is just perfect for me.

Is the 1036 as glossy as the 1029? And, how does the 1036 compare to the 1032?
