My GT72 has recently developed a problem with random vertical lines. It isn't the GPU, external screens work fine.
Having had this issue for a few weeks while waiting for some money to address the issur, I've learned that these lines don't occur on every startup, but that it can start or stop depending on what angles the lid is at. If I startup without line occurring, moving the lid can start the lines occurring or even make the screen go black and moving it again will make the screen come back on with or without lines.
So now I'm starting to think it could be shorting out somewhere between the mobo, through the hinge, to where the screen connects.
Does this sound probable?
Is this an easy or hard thing to fix?

Sounds like the eDP cable is broken/frayed, it costs around 10-15€/$ from eBay/Aliexpress, not too hard to swap.
You should start by removing the bottom cover and check that the cable is well connected(its to the left of the GPU, on the mainboard, a flat flex, and popping the lcd(easy to remove the bezel and the lcd, and then, unplugging the cable on both sides and replug it, but before, disconnect both AC/charger and the battery. -

Sometimes the cable can get pinched in the hinge and cause issues like that. That usually damages it to the point where you need to replace it, though. If re-seating it at both ends doesn't help, you'll need to replace it.

That doesn't mean they don't have the parts to do the repair. You can still call and request for out of warranty repair quote.
