This is done by photoshop, but is basically an identical representation of my screen in its current state on a white background.
When I turn on my laptop, the entire screen, from as far as I can tell seeing the originally white BIOS text, is mildly tinted red. By the time I reach the desktop (30s later), there are only two red strips, one on each side of the screen and fading to the center. The red on the right side of the screen is more pronounced. After leaving the laptop for ~5 minutes, the left side of the screen returns to its normal colors, but the right side does not fix itself.
Note: The red is not opaque, closer to transparent
Plugging my laptop up to an external monitor solves this issue
Laptop is a MSI-1651 barebone from XoticPC, screen is a samsung 1680x1050 matte
Is the backlight or inverter experiencing issues? How long would I expect to be able to use my screen? (condition has not deteriorated after a few reboots)
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

usually that is a sign of a bad backlight bulb, it may last for a while but may get worse till the bulb goes out totally

*Most* of the time this is a connection issue. Try taking the unit and the screen apart, disconnect the cable (often similar to a film strip) connector from both your board and from the screen and try to clean out the connectors with something like a toothbrush. A can of air will also be a good idea! Use a rag and if you want you can *lightly* dampen the rag with Windex or something and use it to wipe off the connections on the film connector.
Put the screen back together and I'll bet your screen problem might go away.
I have had many laptop screens pull this number on me from Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 laptops and any time I would remove the cable and screen and clean like so it would do the trick for me almost every time.
