Tl;dr Spilled beer on my computer, thought it was gg, replaced the keyboard(which is the last thing you want to have to do on this laptop since it seems to be sealed to the top panel of the laptop) and now all is well!

Proud of myself on this one, I had just finished studying and decided hey I've worked hard the past few days, I'll have a beer! Took the cap off, set it down turned around for a moment then went to grab it. RIP MSI.

All over the left side of the keyboard and fan grill, luckily I was just idle at desktop so the GPU wasn't on. So I tiled it upside down let it drain out for a bit, opened it up and there was only a small drop under the battery. I legit spilled nearly half the beer onto this thing and I was like I'm so screwed!!!! I had just sold my desktop to a friend. Which I put together pretty nicely, I usually build a new one each year for fun. I was sad to get rid of the 980 because I was planning on using it for this coming summers 5960x watercooled thing I have as a rough idea atm. But anyways, I was like ah I have this GS60 to keep me company. It's not the newest one but the 5700hq model. Roughly 5 months old, it's actually quite a capable machine. It doesn't hold up to a 980 obviously but for how light and sleek it is and how much performance you get out of it, and the temps stay fairly low, with msi's software open my cpu and gpu usually sit around 62 in witcher on a mix of high/ultra. Continuing on with my life, I've never broken a computer part in my life or spilled on anything. I was like if this is messed up, I'm so rekt right now. I was like its over and I was sad. Went to be frustrated at myself and knowing I had a bunch of finals coming up later in the week, made me feel worse haha.

So the next morning i turned it on, the keys were pretty sticky and awful, but they all worked besides 9. Alright well since I'm programming, 9 is like one of the most important keys for parenthesis. DAMN. I Have an blackwidow chroma that i love and use whenever i can rather than the laptop keyboard so I was like well as long as I stick to my coding at home its fine, I'll just rebind parenthesis to the numpad which I don't use. So all was well, take a shower come back to start popping off the keys and cleaning them. The whole right side of the keyboard stopped working even though all the led's were on. Damn.... I was worried the rest of the day thinking other components would fail. It made it through the day fine, I let witcher run in the background later that night while i studied to make sure it was working. I figured if anything else was to break, having it running and doing things would be the best way to find out. So i ordered a new top panel/keyboard off ebay which luckily was a thing.

As far as I know the keyboard is glued or sealed to the panel, and thats why none of the liquid ever leaked out into the rest of the computer. Anyways I was like well I work in desktops all the time I can do this easy. Ordered on tuesday part came thursday afternoon. I went straight to the fixing.

I was going to make a detailed tear down of the computer becuase there is only one that i know of but it only goes as far as taking out the motherboard and fans. I had to move the entire laptop out of its shell into the new one with the new keyboard.

I didn't have enough time to take pictures and document it the way but heres the computer when its all apart.

The top panel on the right was the new one and you can see I added a few things in to it immediately as I took them out from the computer. It was really easy and only took about 2 hours, the only hard part was the last piece of the panel. above your fan grills that long plastic piece that goes across under the lid from hinge to hinge was a pain in the but and the wifi and blue tooth cables are actually hidden inside there. Anyways, here we are tonight playing games and typing on this laptop :) Oh they also updated the keys from the older model to the 6700hq model. My friend has the 4720hq or 4710hq can't remember what it was but it was the 860m model. The back lighting for that one was marginally good and the 5700hq's leds and backlighting was much better, the 6700hq models keyboard feels nicer than i remember mine feeling before spilling on it and the keys have a clear layer under them that really lets the backlight shine through probably 30% brighter and the color reproduction seems to be much much better. Just something I noticed :p

o no! Good to hear you got it fixed up! Those keyboards on the GS60's are not easy to get back to normal after taking them off! The keyboard flex still good after the repair? Glad you got your beast up and running again!

It feels good when you manage to fix your own computer right? Congrats on opening it completely and replacing your keyboard :) The new keyboard was improved to make the backlight much more brighter by making the sides of the key transparent I believe.

    Thanks!

I had to ordered the keyboard as whole attached to the top panel as you can see from that one picture. I couldn't figure out how to remove the keyboard. It seems that it is sealed or glued or pinned to the panel somehow. I really should have documented all of it because there are no guides online going as far as taking the entire computer apart like that and I'm sure it would be of use to some people.

Those plastic pins on that middle piece that goes between the hinges, was definitely the most annoying thing. That's what took me so long because I didn't want to snap a single one and there were 10 of them I believe. There was also a surprisingly small amount screws inside. There's more screws to that bottom panel than there is inside the whole laptop. I've taken it apart quite a few times swapping out harddrives and just to look, but yeah this was basically as far as you could go dismantling this thing.

It's not impossible but if you aren't confident in being careful and taking your time, this laptop in particular is not one you want to be working in.
