A year ago I replaced the junk HDD by HGST with Samsung 850 2.5" SSD.
Samsung has been real nice and fast.
Earlier this year Samsung came out with the 860 Pro which has twice the endurance and is a bit faster. I think I will go with the 2TB model.

Not worth the upgrade from 850 to 860 unless you just need more space.

Agreed. If you're buying new, buy whichever is cheaper in the size you want, if you've already got a 2TB 850 don't bother with upgrading.JeanLegi and Vistar Shook like this. -
I have a 1TB Samsung 850 now, want to move it to another machine. Nothing wrong with it but 860 Pro seems like a fine choice for the GT80 SLI.

I have a Dell laptop, L702x, with a "hybrid" SSD/HDD unit that has 18,000 hours on it, from circa 2012 and is beginning to malfunction. Well, not yet but CrystalDisk program is saying "Warning" in yellow.
I did mirror its drive by taking the 1TB HGST from the MSI GT80 and that's its only purpose, to mirror the primary drive kind of as a backup. I take an image every few weeks.
Hence the failing 'hybrid' drive can be replaced ideally by the Samsung 850 and its place can take a 2TB 860 Pro.
Maybe around Christmas time, if it lasts that long. Another school of thought is to let it run until it fails. Which may take a long time. I don't have anything important on that machine and the data I do have is mirrored.
The prices on SSDs are coming down every day. Even the 840/850 series, far ahead of any HDD are crashing with the introduction of the new 860 Pro line.Kevin@GenTechPC likes this. -

SSD generally can outlast HDD but they do fail sooner than expected too.
Well that's a wide generalization. The endurance of the SSD has been increasing by leaps in the last few years, e.g. compare Samsung 840, 850 and 860. I like the server-grade SSDs.
I think there is a quality scale of SSDs, ranging from cheap, less enduring to more expensive, data-center class, i.e. Samsung 860 Pro.
In general, I will take a cheap SSD over any expensive HDD.
Best practice is to backup your data all the time.
I take it one step beyond that, I mirror the drives. If delete data or the drive is damaged or any number of reasons, I just boot off the mirror drive and I quickly am in business.
It is expensive to maintain 2x1TB SSDs or 2x2TB but it's so much cheaper than trying to recover data or enduring downtime.

From TechReport endurance test: "The fact that the 840 Pro exceeded 2.4PB is nothing short of amazing". So we would expect even more from recent models.

860 Pro looks real nice in that department, with 2TB better than 1TB.

The other bad thing with SSD is that when they fail, you pretty much cannot recover the data in it, unlike HDD where sometimes you may be able to get some data out of it. -
I'd change a 3 - 4 years old SSD when done some 600 - 700 TB to be on the safe side.
(My Samsung now after 4 years has just 20 TB written, SMART health is 92%...)

Check out the endurance rates of the 860 Pro versus 850. They have gone way up about an order of magnitude.
The total TB written figure has gone way up for the 2TB model.
The total amount is such that it will outlive most computers its placed in. -
850 Evo went from 300TBW to 2400TBW for the 2TB 860 Pro model.
For the 1TB model, the difference is just as impressive, is also 8-fold.
For the 4TB model, the increase is 16-fold for the endurance rating.
