As you may know the fan in my MSI laptop only adjusts to the heat if I put it into sleep mode and wake it up then its good. Otherwise if I just start it up and use it without putting it in sleep mode first, then the temps skyrocket and the fan never changes speed.

I have two options. What would you do and why?

I'd reinstall the OS, that's what I'd do. Until then, though, I'd live with the annoyance of having to put it into sleep first.

Updating BIOS, especially on a laptop, is not really a high risk operation (unless there is a known issue with the BIOS you plan on flashing...).
Just update the BIOS, make sure the battery is fully charged and you're plugged in.
My choice is not up there, but it would be
"Fix the fan speed problem by installing the new 1.0Q bios," because you're not going to brick your laptop.

Hep!, Thanks. I'm just paranoid, I just bought the laptop and my LGR500 died (8600MGT Faulty), Ive spent a lot of money on laptops in the last year and really I just don't wanna risk any more money. Ill probably flash it a month down the road when i start building my courage up. But for now, it seems to be ok. My laptop starts up I press esc, bam im at the desktop and the fans working.

I could take it to the store I bought it and get them to do it, that way if they fk up they pay. But, its tough because right now im in the middle of environment making competition in 3D, and its due Sunday so I wanna finish that before I waste any more time.

I have amazing luck with desktops (Have 2 that have been running almost 24/7 for more than 7 years, everything is the original part no problems) 650Mhz Computer and a 480Mhz computer both running XP, lol.

but laptops so far have been hell for me, lol.
    Dead R500,
and now this fan issue (not that bad).

Why would you risk bricking the laptop by updating the bios?
I know it can happen if the laptop freezes. But that's not to likely is it?

Not likely but the risk is there, they said on MSI forums that alot of ppl had to send off their laptop because of it. Im just worried what if I install the new BIOS and more problems arise. Then ill have to revert back and I can't even find the 1.0o bios for download.
