Hi, All. I’m new here – a non-technical dad trying to upgrade my son’s gaming laptop video card but having some trouble…so be gentle. I’d be very grateful for any help with drivers, instructions, etc. to help me solve this for my son. Details below – happy to provide more if needed.
    Dan

Purchased a Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M card from woodzstack666 in Canada. I’m having some trouble getting the PC to recognize the card is installed. He suggests “Your bios is not assigning the card the ID that nvidia is looking for…Ask [Notebook Review] if someone has a driver for this hardware ID.”

I have the latest BIOS loaded and removed previous drivers so there weren’t conflicts.
When I run the GeForce Experience software to download/update new drivers, I get the error “Sorry, GeForce Experience could not find a driver for this PC.” When I manually download the 980M driver for x64 Win 8.1 and run the install program, it returns “NVIDIA Installer cannot continue. The graphics driver could not find the compatible graphics hardware.”

In Device Manager, there’s a “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Properties” with an error on the General tab that reads “This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device (Code 31). The driver trying to start is not the same as the driver for the POSTed display adapter.”

    The original specs:
    Laptop: Valkyrie CZ-27 purchased from ibuypower.comOS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M 3GB GDDR5
    DMI baseboard Model MS-1763, Rev:0.C
DMI BIOS vendor American Megatrends Inc., version E1763II1.10U
    Basic display adapter hardware id's:
    - PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_110B1462&REV_A1
    - PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_110B1462
    - PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&CC_030000
    - PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&CC_0300

Non technical and doing an MXM upgrade on a machine, that's very brave :)

Firstly in future always check first before ordering an MXM card, then you can be fully aware of any software/firmware you need to have pre-flashed and ready and if there are any special requirements.

You can mod the drivers yourself using the guide here:

I myself use a 980M from Clevo in a MSI GT70 (MS-1763). You just need only the GT72 VBIOS and than runs the card without any problems. There are no modified drivers required.

You do not have to update your system BIOS, but you can :) You can also use the original GT70 Bios ... theoretically, also the EC firmware, but there are sometimes problems with the touch bar. If your touch bar is 1: 1 identical with the from the GT70 (Haswell), you can also use the EC firmware.

Here you find the vBIOS for the MSI GT72 980M 8GB. https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/174372/msi-gtx980m-8192-150108.html

edit: your device looks like a Medion Barebone. So you can´t use the MSI EC Firmware. but for your graphics card upgrade you don´t need a current BIOS / Firmware EC, so it does not matter.

here is a screenshoot of my Clevo 980M 8GB in my MS-1763.

Hey DKDAN, welcome to NBR !

I will see if I can create the modified driver for you.

regular mobile nvidia drivers are supposed to work, it was flashed properly, before being sent out, but you need to uninstall all that nvidia software before installing.
Google a program called "DDU" stands for display driver uninstaller, you can use this in safe mode, and it will safetly and without any issues, remove any left over footprint on your system from previous nvidia drivers.

here , try this, let me know if it installs/works.

you will have to Disable DSE since your using windows 10 each time, and run it as admin, it should prompt you to say no because it is unsigned, just select "install anyways"

Thanks - used DDU in safe mode, no problems.
The laptop is Win 8.1 64-bit, not Win 10. Are different files for Win 8.1?
