do i need to remove the gpu and cpu after removing the heatsinks to apply new thermal compound or can i leave them on the board and apply new thermal compound???
-
leave them on the board unless you're having problems cleaning the old paste.

This can be done with 100% isopropyl alcohol or commercially available compounds.

why would you even bother? MSI already uses a good stock thermal paste "arctic MX-2" there will be a little to no difference..

At the same time I repaste.
It has nothing to do with what is applied at the factory or by the reseller.
Once the heatsinks are removed the TC should be redone before reassembling. -

I prefer MX-4 myself, no scratching, no discolouration of the copper and much more consistent applications.
Repasting with IC Diamond. Quick question
