Re-Pasting my laptop

Thinking of repasting my GE72 MVR 7RG, is it an easy task? What sort of thermal paste should I get?

You can check disassembly videos and guides for your model to get an idea how what to take off and how complex it is, and there are several videos regarding recommended paste methods. Most use the pea size or the rice method, with the idea of having the right amount and no excess, and cover the die as much as possible without making bubbles between heatsink and die.

As for pastes, I have mostly use IC Diamond, but also have Phobya NanoGrease Extreme and Therma Grizzly Kryonaut. I'd say almost any high end paste will give you great results, but I feel IC Diamond has lasted longer before needing to repaste.

 

Thanks for the advice, I decided to buy some Kryonauht and some alcohol swabs, I actually taken the heatsink/heatpipe all off last night, thought the paste was here today, turned out I ordered after midnight so it was the next day! Anyway I found some Coolermaster IC1 Essential I think it's called? Used some acetone to remove the paste, probably not the best but it's so I can use my laptop today, the temps are a little lower already but I hope to get better results with the Kryonaut and the alcohol swabs.

I found it surprisingly easy to remove in the end, just carefully scoping out the area for screws, made sure the cables to the right were pulled over the clip on the fan and a bit of careful left/right and pulling and it came out.

 

Glad you pulled it off! After repasting with Kryonaut and properly cleaning with alcohol swabs you should definitely see an improvement.

 

I would be very interested to know what kind of decrease in temps you get on this. Please keep us posted

 

Can't really say if it's an improvement over the original paste, I think possibly temps have reduced by 10 degrees. So thermal grizzly, with a -0.130mv on the CPU, GPU running around 1800 / 4800MHz(+800). PRIME 95 after 15 mins = 85 degrees max this is on the setting for max heat. Now in Shadow of the tomb raider benchmark temps are not going higher than 80 degrees. So I feel this is probably good temperature?

 

It is, anything below 90 even in prime 95 is amazing.

Those temps are nothing to be concerned about. If you want further improvement you will need to be more aggressive with the CPU clocks and voltages by lowering both of them.

 

It's got some headroom at now at least. Is it possible to give more power with a higher wattage power brick instead of the 230W or won't the computer detect it can give more power? Would be good to stop the 1070 from getting power limited at so low below its potential.

 

the power limit nature on your devices is on each device. Even if you put a more powerful PSU, the 1070 will be power limited. You need to raise/remove the power limits in order to overcome it.

I am not well versed on this, but other users here know how to. I assume you would need to flash a vbios that first allows it, and then perhaps mod registry in your EC to allow your PC to do it as well? I don't know.

 

Have to say tried the Anthem Demo and that pushes the laptop more than Prime 95, 85 on the GPU 90 on the CPU!

Wondering if I didn't tighten the screws hard enough? I couldn't turn them anymore though or I'd end up damaging the heads then it could be stuck on if I needed to re-paste again. I also just applied a dollop relatively sized in comparison to a "pea" sized amount on a normal CPU, so slight smaller.

Are my recommendation of thread to post in about power limit or should I make a new thread.

And an update, I've gone from -120 to -140 on the CPU/Cache, now the temps didn't go over 75 in Anthem for either GPU/CPU.

The iGPU is at -1000, I don't believe that figure, I then force the iGPU on Heaven benchmark, clearly 99% usage of the iGPU, I would expect instant crash so I don't think the voltage adjustments in Throttlestop are getting applied for the iGPU any idea why?

 

I did this with my gs43vr & saw roughly 10-15c cooler temps at load... i should note i downgraded to win7 & always have the rear lifted about an inch or something to help with airflow so those combined with kryonaut made a pretty big difference
