I've had a weird and rare, but recurring problem with my GX700 (which is an ibuypower LX-775). I got the computer in January, and this has only happened twice (I think), but sometimes it will just shut down. Not go through the shutoff sequence, but just turn off in the middle of something. Both times, it was plugged in, so it's not a power issue. Is this anything that's happened to anyone else before? And is this actually a hardware issue, or could something else be the cause? Thanks!

I think you mean an ibuypower LX-775 is a GX700
ibuypower just rebrands other notebooks whereas MSI actually makes computer parts and whole computers.
But to your problem I have had this problem on other electronic devices and it was usually something involving the power connectors INSIDE the unit. I don't know how easy it is to open up a GX700 having never seen one in person but try to have it looked at under warranty and have them check for bad connections inside the system.
If they won't do it then have an experienced electrician take a look and try to make sure that the voltage is at what the psu says it delivers and that it is steady. Perhaps power spikes are occuring? This is a very slim chance but maybe there are power spikes occuring and your computer shuts off to prevent critical damage? Again that is unlikely but if you have nothing else to go on it's better than nothing. -

Sounds like it is going into thermal shutdown (processor, gpu, etc-overheating). -
I'm pretty sure you guys are right. Since that last post, the shutoff hadn't happened again until now. I downloaded SpeedFan, which shows both cores running at 57C. Is this within acceptable limits? Should I power down for a while? Buy a laptop cooler?

If it does then there is something wrong, heatsink, fan, thermal material, etc. -
I suppose leaving it on for days at a time wouldn't help then, would it? And what is the threshold? Or, where could I find such info?

What are your 2 core temps and ACPI temp at idle? I can compare them to the unit i am on so you can see if your high?? -
Yesterday, I took the back panel off that was covering the video and network cards, and poked around with some compressed air for a while. This definitely seems to have helped. I'm also propping it up in the back with a book, and so now since my last post it has not shut down again. Here are the near-idle numbers (only firefox open):
Hard Drive: 41C
ACPI ("Temp1"): 45C
Core 1: 27C
Core2: 27C
Video Card Core: 58C
Ambient: 0C
Clearly, the problem is with the video card's cooling and ventilation system. I'll see if I can't get any more dust out of there.
