I've been wanting to upgrade my mobile processor to a quad for a while now. Seen some cheap processors on ebay. I'm most interested in the Q9200.
Was wondering if anyone has done it with the gt725-074. If so how? Flashes?

I know there are different processors intended for the compatibility of the two different express chipsets (ICH9em and ICH9m) as listed here. http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35515. Mine is the PM45 (ICH9M?) chipsets. And does turbo mode still work with the quads?

    Does this one work? Q9100

Quads will work just fine in the gt725. I was able to obtain my ES Qx9300 for $450.

Between the two you listed, the q9100 is the better choice (that qx9300 is way to expensive, even for an OEM).

Oh very nice! What do you get for 3dmarks and pc benchmarking? Any significant increase (CPU definitely)?

    What about this? the Q9200
    http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Intel-Quad-...3ca5c83ad6&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_4018wt_933

There are cheaper Qx9300 processors that are ES of course. Which one would you recommend?

Also how does turbo mode work with this quad processors?
Or does it not work completely? Q9000 from 2 ghz to 2075 per core. That's a 3.6+% increase?
I've heard of set FSB and an ID.

Also is there any special flashing of bios or anything before I can install one of these quads.

I have es qx9300 and it works just fine. Turbo mode and quads really don't work well. There are ways to OC it, but nothing as simple as pushing a button.

Thanks for the quick replies. What mechanics, if any, do you use? Can you answer my above edited questions?

Turbo mode will increase the quad by 100mhz.

Flashing to an older bios (one without turbo mode) along with setfsb, you can OC much higher.

So how did the update go?

Did you manage to get the Q9100 or QX9300 in the GT725-074US?

    Better performance?

I am looking at doing this but wouldn't mind hearing some success stories first...

q9000, q9100, q9200, qx9300 should all work, but i know there are certain types of quad groups within the es catagory so be careful when choosing but hopefully you will find alot of members dropping the correct cpu types in soon!

i think q9200 should be QAVR chip though could be wrong xD

and theres definately a big bump in performance,

Ahh yip. Would it also require a BIOS update or should it just work with the current most up to day GT725?

Good to hear there is a decent performance increase as the P8600 which is currently in this thing isn't the most powerful around...

Last question, are there any online shops that sell the Q9100/9200 cpus and ship internationally or would Ebay be the best bet? I live in New Zealand and we have pretty much nothing tech wise down here

Skip the Q9100 and get the Q9200. Should be able to get it off eBay and like Mr Cata said , get the QAVR/QAVS and avoid the rest ;)

No Bios update required , it will work straight out of the box but you will need a Bios "downgrade" to overclock a Quad on the 725.

Get it from Shirley he/she ships abroad and he/she is reliable.

    Haha he/she again :p

But yeah, Dead's got a point, go straight to q92, heck even avoid qx93 because the 92 isn't far off,

As you can see dead is one of the many members with the upgrade, running at some nice clocks with bullet holes in the back of his laptop haha.

All socket P is Micro-FCPGA. Yes I did the upgrade myself and as you said , it just slot in place without any force needed whatsoever , just as desktop.

    Yeah that's the one.

Get the 9200 (Svet from the MSI forums is working on a BIOS for me witch should be able to change the multiplier). Should be easy to mod your BIOS, I can show you where to contact him if you can't find the forum...

    Donations make everything possible ;)

Svet is a good guy, I hope he makes a fully working version soon.

The good thing is that his test BIOSs work ok and dont brick your system.

He has given me one more bios to test today, works great. I feel like the next test will be perfect.

    Hopefully it will come today.

Tested the new bios, getting better.

Now I am able to access the new page, with new options shown (ram frequency and timings), but CPU VID and CPU ratio are not shown yet.

    But it's getting there :)

Would this BIOS work in MS-1722 (GX720) laptop? I have one with a QX9300 OEM in it, and I've been trying to find any software tool for changing the CPU's multiplier, but without any success (Intel's XTU doesn't work with this laptop). Being able to change the multiplier from the BIOS level would be just great... Especially that, when undervolted, the CPU hardly reaches 70*C in full load of 4 cores.

You would have to ask Svet to mod your BIOS.

Once he figures out how to do it for my notebook, it shouldn't take long to "port" the mod to your BIOS.

I can send you a PM with info on how to contact svet if you want.

Have him mod it to comply with XTU, then we can perform much better overclocks from within the windows area.

It might be, but if you have a peak into the m17's bios (As thats compliant) you can look for cluuueeees -_-

Just an update on the BIOS mod, after many more test versions, the option to change the CPU ratio doesn't show up. looks like it either doesn't work or maybe since I have a T7300 (with locked multi) it isn't shown.

I'll try to get a Q9200, see if that helps. Anyway, Svet can't do anything else right now to help me.

@Dead2th3world, since you already have a Q9200, maybe you can try a test version and see if it works for you. I suggest you either PM Svet or post a thread like mine (in the MSI forum).
