I put a new HDD into my laptop, and did a clean install of Windows XP w/ SP3. Everything runs very choppy, even though I haven't even installed much yet, or transferred any files from my old HDD. I'm trying to get drivers from MSI's website, but have been unsuccessful so far. Plus, I can't get the wifi to work, though I'm able to connect with a CAT5 cable. When I go to the menu to turn off my computer, I also no longer have the option to go into standby, I can either shut down or restart.

    Suggestions?

Your no standby issue is because you do not have all the drivers installed. Here is the link for you notebook drivers:

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=135&prod_no=648

Make sure you install xp/sp3 and then the chipset drivers. Install the rest from the msi site, then windows update and you should be good.

Thank you very much! I couldn't find driver's on MSI's website for the life of me when I looked yesterday. I downloaded and installed all the drivers, but can't quite figure out how to install the BIOS update - is that even important? Also, you mentioned chipset drivers separately, are those not on the MSI site, do I need to find those elsewhere? I Googled for drivers for my chipset, and didn't get any results. CPUZ says I have the Xpress 200 RS480 chipset with a SB400 southbridge.

Also, I can't get the wifi to work still. When I go to device manager it says there's a network controller in PCI slot 1, but it has no idea what to do with it.

Unpack the driver to a folder on your desktop, right click the network controller in device manager and select update driver, then choose then the 'specific location' option and point it to the folder you just made

I tried doing that with each driver, it didn't work =(

I never touched the wireless card in my comp, so it's the same one that came with it when I bought it.

The chipset i am pretty sure are in the ati vga package. There may be a wireless lan softkey you need to enable to turn on the wireless. I have not had my hands on one of these in some time so i am not sure. the drivers for your wireless card are either the 6833 (no BT) or 6855 (with BT).

6833 doesn't run when I click on it, 6855 runs and installs, but it says there's no card. I'm using 32 bit XP, and I'm click on the appropriately labeled one. As soon as my external enclosure arrives for my old HDD would it be possible to somehow pull the old drivers off of it and install them onto my new HDD?

Are you sure the wireless is turned on? I am pretty sure there is a button above the keyboard to enable it? The wireless button should be to the right of the power button.

Yep, forgot to mention I've had that on along along. The LED for it works for turning it on/off, but the atual wifi itself isn't coming on. Great memory on knowing exactly where the button is, also.

My external enclosure for my old HDD arrived today, and I managed to locate the drivers, they were in a folder simply called Intel, and in a sub folder I found setup.exe. I ran it, and through miracles beyond my understanding wifi now works. Everything is back to normal =)
