Hi Everyone,
I just (today 06/02) got a MSI-1039 Notebook from avadirect. I installed a few programs, adaware, spybot, winzip, vlc player, steam, east asian language pack, and omega drivers. I also installed a few drivers, 1 for my HP deskjet 3650, 1 for my USB hub, 1 for my mouse, 1 for my maxtor external hard drive. After this, I restarted the computer and now the computer just FREEZES everytime it gets into the windows XP loading screen(with the blue status bar).
I tried to safe mode but it goes through a few processes and freezes again.
The last line of code when I start in safe mode is this:
"multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\BTHidMgr.sys"
I put in the windows xp cd and tried to reinstall/repair the OS but again the system freezes at "Setup is starting Windows"
I bought the exact same model from ibuypower.com about 3 weeks ago and I encountered the same exact problem. I sent it back to them for a refund. But now it is happening again!
Is there something I am doing wrong?!?!? I'm not super tech savey, but I never had problems like this with my other computers before.
Here are the specific specs of the laptop:
#CUSTOM NOTEBOOK, MSI MS-1039 Turion Performance Laptop, 15.4" TFT WXGA, ATI® Mobility Radeon® X1600 256MB Graphics
#MICROSTAR, MS-1039 Turion Notebook Barebone, ATI® RX480M, 15.4" WXGA Glare TFT, DVD±RW DL, ATI® Mobility Radeon® X1600 256MB Graphics
# AMD, Turion 64 MT-37 2.0GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 25W, 90nm, 754-pin lidless mPGA
# CORSAIR, 2 GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 400MHz PC-3200 SDRAM SODIMM, Non-ECC
# HITACHI, 80.0GB Travelstar 7K100 7200-RPM, 8MB cache, 9.5mm, EIDE
# MICROSTAR, 8x Dual Layer DVD-RW Notebook Optical Drive (Included)
# MICROSTAR, MP54GBT2 Combo Wireless-G + Bluetooth Adapter, IEEE 802.11b/g 11/54Mbps, Mini-PCI (for MSI n/b only)
# MICROSOFT, Windows XP Home Edition
Anyone know what I am doing wrong, or perhaps a way to fix the issue? I really don't want to return another faulty laptop.
If this is in the wrong section of the forums plz forgive me and relocate it at will.

I know that the 1029 was funky with some ram. I'm not sure that the 1039 has the same problem but is there certain ram recommended? Have you tried different ram?
Have you tried a clean install and not installing bluetooth driver and software? -
It looks like the bluetooth drivers that are causing the problem

Are you booting from the WinXP CD? Do you get the blue screen with the prompt to repair/reinstall....
If not go into the BIOS and make sure that your optical drive is at the top of the boot priority list.
Booting from the WinXP CD will bypass the current installation and whatever problems it has. Then you can format the HDD and do a clean install -
In the BIOS the DVD/CD is the 1st device in the boot list. There isn't a way to reformat from the BIOS is there? -
Are you familliar with "fdisk" from the days of Windows 9x?
That fdisk doesn't work with NTFS, but there is something simillar called Super-fdisk, that you can use to creat a bootable CD that will allow you to format using it.
Here is a link to the website: http://www.ptdd.com/manual2.htm -
. I can't believe this has happened to me twice...

OK!!!
I have no idea what I did but on the 8th try of booting with Windows XP CD, I started hitting random keys and it worked!!!
I am now back in windows but I am very afriad of turning off my notebook. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should try to install/uninstall or any diagnostic programs I can run to try to avoid this problem again? -
try and figure out a way to uninstall any bluetooth related software and drivers.

ibuypower.com is not a good place to buy. i have only heard horror stories about them.

Looks like it has to do with some type of spyware or trojan, you will get pages of results with your exact problem. -
To the OP you might try contacting IVT Corp homepage (guys that make BlueSoleil software) here. -
Remove your battery for a few seconds, then try booting to Windows without the XP CD.
I had the L715(1036) and had issues booting after freezing. The only way to fix it was to remove the battery and put it back in. This may help you.
I shipped mine back, had a replacement sent to me, and the same thing happened with the replacement. There may be some kind of problem with the ATI/AMD chipsets from MSI.
I decided to go with a 1032, Pentium M 760, 1gig memory, 100GB 7200rpm drive, etc... I feel the Intel chipsets are proven to be reliable. -

If you did you would see hundreds if not thousands of the exact same error. and yes it is a bluetooth file. -
Here is my problem now, after I repaired windows I uninstalled my bluetooth driver but now my wireless won't work. Also, I cannot get my computer to hibernate, when I tell it to shut down, it goes to a black screen that says it is ok to shut down windows now and I have to do it manually. Anyone know how I can fix this?

I have the 1032 and I've had that exact problem.
Unplug AC power, remove battery, replace battery, plug in and reboot. -
I had the same exact problem. Too bad I didn't look at the forums before I tried to format. It didn't boot up then it got stuck on the windows setup thing. I took the battery out and am doing a fresh install now (i'm on my desktop). Any ideas why taking the battery out and putting it back in would do anything?

i hear it does some sort of hardware reset. i don't know all the technical details.

Hey Dart...
I saw your reply about you having the same trouble with the 1032 model. It happened on both my L715s and the 1032 on the first day. I bought mine from RKcomputer.net and they think it's software. I've faught with the guy for a couple days over this problem.
I'm 100% sure there is something wrong with the hardware, but they won't give up on the software.
Are you running home or pro? Also, any special drivers?
Maybe we can work together to figure this out. -
I have separate posts where I worked through my problems, but to summarize, my essential problems were a bad processor and incompatible memory.
My non-boot was fixed with a new CPU. Stability issues were fixed with different memory.
I'm running XP Pro SP2 and Linux. In chasing my problems, I updated windows, installed Intel chipset drivers, flashed to a newer bios, and updated to NVidia 84.21 drivers.
The boot hang problem seems to be related to system crashes. If the system crashes, there is a chance it will hang on booting. I've had one lockup since replacing the memory that I think may have been due to overheating, and it did hang on boot. -
I thought the Omega drivers caused this problem on MSI ms-1029
-
Did we ever confirm what was causing this problem?

It has been about a month now. After speaking with AVAdirect customer service I learned that MSI had issued a recall for a whole bunch of 1039s. They did not tell me why but it has been over 1 month and I have not had a working laptop. The worst part of it is that the thing worked for only 2 hours before it died on me. Right now I am waiting for a replacement but if nothing comes to my door by thursday I am getting a full and complete refund.
-
sorry to hear that you got a lemon. i hope things work out for you. =/
-
I just wanted to chime in, I ordered a 1039 from Avadirect and experienced the exact same boot-freezing problem after an initially successful install (it didn't crash on shutdown either). I really don't think it's related to any driver-specific problem, as the first thing I did when I recieved it was to swap out the hard drive with a faster one that I already had. After the freezing problems started, I swapped out two different formatted notebook hard drives, and all exhibited the same freezing problem. It's since been sent back fora refund.
-
I've got an MS-1057 and I'm noticing the exact same problem; I took out the battery and put it back in, and now it has booted up properly; if just removing then replacing the battery will work every time to fix this problem, it's an annoyance, but at least it's a relatively simple workaround.
-
I got the MSI-1039 back again from AVAdirect and they seemed to have fixed the booting problem. It's just too bad now the graphics card is going crazy and the unit is blue screen of deathing every 5 minutes. It's back to the company with this one for a refund.
Oh BTW, did anyone notice that the right hand rest of their MSI-1039 got extreamly hot? -
I have same problem with my MSI 1036, system freezes continuesly, I tried re-install Win XP Pro more then 3 times, make all Win updates and also I updated the BIOS. But same problem. I start thinking that it might be a Hardware problem. But I am still doing some test on it.
System Info:
MSI 1036 Barebone,
CPU: AMD Turion 2.0 GHz
Memory: 1GB Kingston 400MHz SO-DIMM 200pins
HDD: WD 80 GB EIDE 5400RPM 2.5"
WiFi Type III B Card, Bluetooth -
Sounds like its overheating to me...are you sure your fan is working and heatsink is properly installed?
-
Unfortunately we found what cause that problem, we think it is the ATI X700 module, which is corrupted or unproperly installed by the Manufacturer.
Or bad ATI drivers, since we also got "bad ATI driver by Microsoft" that is the systems error cat 102 event ID 103. When I sent report to Microsoft it says: "It is the Video adapter device driver"
To recreate this problem, do a clean install of Win XP Pro 32 Bit, loaded with the latest 3Dmark, if you start 3Dmark and your system bumbed out, likely it is your ATI X700 is bad !
Too bad, I will send this one for RMA, but will change it for another 1036 to try again. I love that model. Hope this info is useful. -
Sorry for double post... but i just had an update about my situation.
look the MSI forgot to remove the tape from the thermal compound from my X700 heatsink
see for you self
And the MSI tech told to make sure I have my CPU compound setup properly... oh boy...
