Howdy, I'm a long haul trucker and recently purchased a MSI GT-72 dragon edition laptop (with the desktop gtx 980) for use on the road. I really dig the laptop and it runs games flawlessly.

However, I have a problem. The included power supply will not run off my inverter. I have a rigmaster APU and a 1500 watt cobra cpi 1575 inverter in the truck. This thing can run microwaves, fridges, I've even seen guys running gaming desktop computers (750+ watt) off their inverters.

I believe the issue is the inverter outputs a modified sine wave as opposed to a pure sine wave and the laptop power supply will not work at all.

    1. Can I purchase a aftermarket power supply for this laptop that will work off a modified sine wave? I know lots of laptops work on these inverters...I'm guessing they filter the electric noise better than this power supply. This would be my preferred choice.

    2. Is there a way to run off DC power (I have 12 volt plugs all over my truck)?

Any other advice or suggestions are welcome. I might could find an inverter that outputs a pure sine wave but those are generally pretty expensive and I'm not sure my company would let me install it over their pre-equipped inverters.

Right now I have a $3,000 paperweight in my truck and fallout is calling my name :(. I'm on the road for months at a time so I have to figure some way to get this to work...

The notebook requires 19.5V to function properly.

How about getting an UPS battery unit such as Cyberpower UPS 1500 which output sine wave?

Great idea! Would a ups have any trouble with the modified sine wave coming from my inverter?

As far as acceptance I don't think there would be any issues.
Because it's taking the AC power generated from your inverter unit and the UPS unit itself is an inverter, battery, and battery charger. So its output is a regenerated sine wave electricity.
Another pro going with UPS is that you won't get surge hit on your computer system.

Converting back & forth is somewhat inefficient in a way (due to some heat created in the process), but other than this I don't foreseen any issues.

I concur. The UPS sounds like a good addon for the truck.
And I know what you mean about fallout calling. lol

Hey Kevin, you did me right. Finally made it to a bestbuy (harder to do with a 75 foot vehicle than you might think) and picked up a ups, and my laptop is back in business.

Wanted to say thanks, and while I had never heard of gentechpc before this, I will be sure to at least give y'all a look on my future purchases.
