Does anyone have 1866mhz RAM in their 16F2 laptop?

I'm having issues with restarting on my 16F2 laptop with the 1866mhz RAM (Kingston Hyper X). This is no MS Windows issue because this issue also occurs in DOS.

What happens is when the computer tries to restart, it ends up at a black screen and completely hangs. I have tried ctrl+alt+del in DOS, and it hangs there when it tries to restart. It also hangs when I do save and exit from BIOS. I do not have this issue when I put in my 1333mhz RAM.

I have run memtest86 but there appears to be no issues with the RAM.

Is this a known issue with 1866mhz RAM or does my laptop appear to have some kind of issue?

Wouldn't make sense to be a known issue if the resellers are offering the same RAM.

There are resellers offering the 1866mHz ram but the MSI notebooks DO NOT SUPPORT the 1866mHz memory. You may get the PC to boot but in the end you will end up with; black screen, blue screen, and many other O/S performance problems. The MAX supported stable memory in the MSI models are 1600mHz.

What is your installed memory? With 4GB the PC will always boot, 8GB of 1866mHz it is a 50/50 chance. Anything over 8GB will usually not boot with 1866mHz memory. The MS-16F2 and MS-1761 Should not use and does not support 1866mHz memory. It is a known issue as these models do not support 1866mHz memory.

I have 8GB 1866mhz installed. So far I have had 100% chance of booting up. It's just the rebooting that is bothering. It's actually not too bad...I just need to know that if I ever want to reboot, I need to do a full shutdown, and just power back on my laptop. There are no issues when I do that.

    No blue screens so far...

The issue may not be your memory. Does it do the same thing when you put your DDR3/1600 memory back in it?

What firmware are you using for your Agility 3 SSD?

I'm using that kingston 1866 (the plug and play version) in my 16F2 and it works fine.

I did notice when I installed windows 7 x64 ultimate, I got frequent black screens when attempting a reboot. Other than that, it worked just fine.

I re-installed windows but used Win7 x64 enterprise edition and this time around, I've yet to see a single black screen. Every single reboot is normal, gaming, video encoding, system benchmarks, etc all work great.

I'm convinced something wasn't quite right with windows itself rather than the memory. From what This guy told me though, there are 2 different versions of the kingston 1866. One is plug and play, the other is not. Plug and play has a big PNP on the memory label.

Also for what it's worth, Xotic pc offers the kingston 1866 as an option when buying a 16F2 and in another thread, commented on it working great for them which is what prompted me to hit new egg to get some myself.

I have no reboot issues with my 1333mhz RAM. Using latest firmware for the SSD.

I am using the plug n play one from newegg.

yep same kind I've got. You're using the default bios? Not flashed to a custom bios correct?

If so, I'm willing to bet there may be some issue with the OS itself but I'd also double check the firmware version of the SSD. My vertex 3 has the most recent firmware but like I said in my first post, I'm not sure if something just went wrong during the windows install or service pack install (it bluescreened when rebooting after the SP1 install but I think that it didn't like the touchpad drivers I used from MSI's website)

It may be worth trying to reinstall the OS and see if it still acts up.

Well as I mentioned in the first post, this issue occurs in DOS/BIOS even without any hard drives in the laptop. A simple ctrl+alt+del in dos/bios for a reboot will show a black screen so it really seems like the RAM is the issue here.

Same here, I don't have any RAM under my keyboard. I left memtest running overnight so it passed like six times.

Simple question. But have you tried the sticks individually?

Yes I have also tried that. Same issue occurs unfortunately.
