I second Classic Shell, have been using it since I got my Windows 8 computer.

Do you just not like the Metro interface? If you press the Windows key and D at the same time it will take you to a regular desktop you'll be used to.

StartIsBack is a great tool as well. It mostly gets rid of the crappy Win 8.1 "modern" Metro interface.

Honestly with windows 8.1 and launching into desktop, you rarely use metro at all and you dont need to install any software to emulate the menu.

But if you can't live without the menu, sure, most suggestions here do work wonders and I have used them myself too.

On the whole I find this not to be true. Win8.1 is the superior platform.

But, if you have a particular program with compatibility issues then I can see your frustration.

This may seem obvious, but nobody told me at the time.. That right clicking the Windows icon brings up some very handy shortcuts and traditional shut down options. :)

guys I finally found a solution myself to install win 7 into a pre-win8 laptop!! it worked!!! when i was stucking at the screen all i did were
    1. shift + f10
    2. taskmrg.exe
3.kill cmd.exe process so it bypassed the verify process

8.1 + classic shell is awesome. I get the super-awesome power user menu on right click/WindowsX but I can also add back my Win7 start menu and turn off those awful charms that pop out on the sides. Best of everything.
