How much paste do you need to put on the vram? I was thinking about treating the vram like a hot dog sort of amount. Warranty does not matter much to me . I have a 720qm and mx-3 on the way ;).

I would suggest when applying the thermal paste to apply a small dab to the VRAM and then spread it out it a razor blade. Keep in mind not to touch the VRAM its self but to use the razor blade to gently spread the thermal paste so that is covers the entire surface in one smooth layer.

I find that this practice gives you a lot more control over the amount that you use and you will be less likely to have bleed over. You could also apply a thin line and use the same method. This way should require less spreading of the paste.

So you need a thinner layer than the thermal pads is what you are saying. Thanks for the tips, I may substitute the razor blade with a old credit card or similar.

I'd put 1/3 of grain of rice in each chip and let the heatsink to the spreading.

It'll definitely take a lot more paste than 1/3 of a grain of rice to cover the whole chip.

The exact amount might differ from model to model though, so I would suggest doing a "test run" using only a small dab to see how it spreads. This should give you an idea of how much paste you'll need to apply.

I would also suggest replacing the thermal pads of the VRMs with thermal paste. This should help decrease the gap between the heat sink and both the vRAM chips and VRMs.

Success! I upgraded to the i7 720qm! Here are the temp (with mx-3) when idling and with my room being @ 14.5c ambient and using a zalman nc2000.

Max load temps improve big time as well. I will see if I have time to post a screenshot running furmark and Intel burn test later.

Use a credit card instead of the razor blade. :)

You need at least to cover the whole vram, Like you said, you can use a good amount and clean off the excessive bleeding.
