    Hey everyone,

I'm about to order a modified Ghost Pro 3K from Xoticpc and I wanted to ask if anyone here has had any experience overclocking the cpu or memory. I'm going to have them overclock the gpu, but am I going to need to flash the bios or use software for the CPU and memory?

I was also going to upgrade the stock 16gb of memory to the 1866mhz Crucial Ballistix, but they also have 1600mhz Corsair Vengeance and 1600mhz Kingston Hyperx. Any opinions?

    Thanks in advance.

You can overclock the CPU with Intel XTU software to up the speed a couple steps and also play with voltage very easily, no BIOS flash needed. Faster memory I've never seen much benefit from when I've upgraded (ie going from stock stuff to 1866mhz)... it'll help a little bit in benchmarks but won't be noticeable in games. I'd save your money there but there's no downsides to upgrading.

Also, I'd be careful with what they overclock on the GPU... the 870m is running at the very limit of the cooling system in this chassis even at stock clocks and prone to throttle, defeating any overclocking gains. I'd be leery of an overclock unless it came with an undervolt as well.

    Enjoy your new machine!

Lots of info, I appreciate it. I may very well skip the gpu overclock then.

The stock memory is 16gb at 1600mhz, not sure what brand buy one person I talked to said his came with Kingston Value. I was thinking of upgrading for both the speed and lower timings, but also because the Crucial Ballistix Sport apparently comes with software to overclock it. But, it's also an extra $180. In your opinion, is it really worth $180 to upgrade to "performance" memory? I'm not the kind of person who's going to be benchmarking everything or sweating over whether I'm getting an extra few fps.

    Thanks

Based on your last comment, I wouldn't worry about upgrading the memory and would save the money... you'll never notice the difference in actual gameplay, I've got the same stock 1600mhz RAM in mine and it's plenty fast for gaming. Spend the extra $180 on games and a good mouse!

That makes sense. Do you have the super raid setup? I was planning on having two 128gb Samsung Evo msata's set in super raid instead of the two Crucial M550s. Any thoughts?

Yeah the memory is not worth it over the likes of an SSD.

RAID setup is great as it boosts a lot of performance, but on the other it still can fail even it is less likely to fail when compared against mechanical drives.

@Kevin, what do you think of b77solo's thoughts regarding overclocking the GPU:

"Also, I'd be careful with what they overclock on the GPU... the 870m is running at the very limit of the cooling system in this chassis even at stock clocks and prone to throttle, defeating any overclocking gains. I'd be leery of an overclock unless it came with an undervolt as well."

To both of you (or anyone) would having the IC Diamond thermal paste applied compensate for the increased heat from the GPU overclock? Or would the GPU throttling still negate any overclock?

And Kevin, why does Gentech offer the Crucial m500 for the smallest m2 ssd and not the m550 like the larger options?

If you want to tweak then you ideally want to re-paste with IC diamond, replace all the thermal pads with 0.5mm and tune your CPU for minimum power consumption at stock speeds and then play with the GPU clocks and voltage to find the sweet spot.

Could you make a review of your gs60 ghost pro when you get it? Especially the thermals when doing surfing & everyday stuff compared to gaming as well as sound of the fans

I'm guessing I'll have it in about two weeks. Shoot me an email at [email protected] in a few weeks and I can give you a run down. I'd say I'd go ahead and post the review here, but I know I'll forget.
