Other than size, are there any significant differences between the GS60 and GS70?

Hey all,

I've been taking a hard look at the GS60 and GS70. I like them both - I'm just not sure which size I prefer at the moment. To help in my decision, are there any significant differences between them? Does the GS70 have better cooling due to its size? Are there any hardware differences?

I've checked reviews and there's no direct comparison between the two that I found. Most of them are either put up against the GT72 or another brand.

I'd love to see one of them with a 3K screen and 6GB of VRAM. Any word on that?

The type of SSD they use are different. The GS70 uses's mSATA vs m.2 the GS60 uses. While there really isnt much performance difference there are more mSATA options available and they are currently easier to find. This would only matter if you plan on upgrading those down the road.

We haven't seen anything higher then a 1080 screen with the GTX 970M 6.0GB.

 

Thanks. The 1080p screen isn't a deal breaker for me - just would be nice to have a 3K option with more VRAM.

Heatwise, do they run about the same?

Yeah, GS70 and GS60 perform around the same in all parameters. GS70 is aimed to those that want a bigger screen.

 

How about temperature and noise differencies ?

 

It's easier to change the SSDs in a GS70 compared to the GS60. With the GS70, you just unscrew the bottom plate.

GS60 runs slightly hotter than GS70 due to difference in thermal capacity.
Also, this varies by the difference with GPU. A more powerful GPU definitely draws more power thus generates more heat.

 

Another question - How hard is it to get Windows 7 drivers for either? I figure most drivers can be downloaded from their respective makers (Realtek, Nvidia, etc), but what about the MSI specific stuff like bios updates, etc?

I'm really not a fan of Windows 8.x.

Most of Win8.x packages already have Win7 drivers. If you find anything that doesn't work in Win7 then feel free to let us know.

 

I went for the GS70 fundamentally because of the easier access to storage. It also manages to stay completely silent while idling and light tasks, which I believe it's not the case for the GS60, so that's a nice bonus as well. I'm also using it as a desktop replacement and I'm not going to be lugging around that much so you need to take that into account when deciding between the two. The GS70 is light for its size but it wouldn't be my choice if I needed to travel with it on a daily basis.

As for Win7, off the top of my head the only driver that you may have to get out of your way to get it is the USB 3.0 driver, which it isn't really needed on Windows 8 because it's built-in but you will need it for Windows 7. You can also give Windows 8 a go, I heavily despise the mobile crap Microsoft's slapping on top of Windows these days but I've found is bearable with third-party addons. StartIsBack and AeroGlass made it tolerable for me.

 

Thanks to you both! I haven't had problems getting drivers for other laptops from the component manufacturers. I was aware of USB 3.0 driver for Win 7. I usually pick that up with the latest chipset drivers from Intel. I didn't have any problems with drivers on a 2 year old GT60 already own.

I'm leaning toward the GS60 at the moment as I travel for work and the size is about right. I haven't seen any local shops with the GS70, but I have seen one at shops when I travel. Now that I'm focusing more on the GS60/GS70, I'm hoping I can find a shop locally or when I travel that has both side by side for a good comparison.
